You do know what 'C' ratings are, right? 25C * 22A = 550A at 22V, so if you're flying with two of them, you could light a small town. That's 24,000 watts.
There are a few folks flying monster copters at 30-50lbs AUW who need this kind of power. And when you’re lifting a $50,000 camera package, a couple of $579 LiPos are just part of the equation.
Check out this beast that Ziv Marom has built to be able to fly TWO RED EPICs for 3D work:
Yes, my MōVI can pan 360° continuously. Its only connection to the copter is through the FreeFly “Toad in the Hole” quick-mount hardware. The gimbal’s power, motors and all its electronics are all self-contained on the gimbal, and I use a separate transmitter manned by my camera operator to...
Right now I have an Iftron Mondo Stinger and the Freefly HDMI converter that I’ve mounted on the upper camera plate. I’m powering them off of a tap from the MōVI’s battery, which Freefly says not to do, but I’m doing, anyway. And it works great. My MōVI’s not even breaking a sweat flying the...
Definitely not required to use their landing gear, but it is by far the lightest and most efficient system to use. There are certainly people using retracts. But they are heavier and add an element of complexity.
Thanks, man.
My progress is very well documented on the Freefly forum, but in a nutshell...
- X8 frame based on cinestar with 500mm booms
- KDE 4012 motors
- 16" CF props
- MK Double Quadro 2XL "cool" PDB
- MK FC 2.5
- MK NC 2.0
- was using Zippy 8000 6S batteries but I think I'm switching to...
The Toad doesn’t replace anything with the standard Cinestar/MōVI or Cinestar/3-axis setup. In both of those cases, there is a 4-screw mount that mates them, and the Toad in the Hole sits between them. What it does do is add an inch and a half or so of space between them, which can potentially...
Super happy with my M5. Freefly have been terrific with support, and it's been a great experience. I am mostly flying the GH4 right now on my custom heavy lift X8. I did get the Toad, and it's great. Did a huge 5 mile hike with the copter recently and would never have tried it without the Toad...

I’ve been flying my custom MK/Cinestar 8-based 6S X8 with a MōVI M5 for a couple months. It’s a phenomenal system, and I’ve had wonderful results. Here’s a photo of my rig.
Fantastic work, man. I’m curious whether you ran into any flak from anybody in those locations you flew. I assume you didn’t have a COA or permits or anything. It certainly looks like you were being super professional and careful, but there’s all kinds of folks out there who are opposed to small...
I use similar Zippy batteries, and I use EC5 connectors for my copter. I would not cut off the Zippy bullets, but instead trim off the heat shrink and desolder the bullets. You then have a nicely-tinned end, and don’t lose a half inch or so of the already-short leads. And as others said above...
I was shocked when I saw how flimsy these locking parts are. Here’s a video showing how they work. And the fact that they’re RED doesn’t make them any stronger. Just more bling-y, which seems to be a design priority. Too bad bling doesn’t fly.
I built my own Alexmos-based BLG for my Cinestar heavy lifter. Easy to rebalance/retune for different lens/zoom/filters. Zenmuse is good but so limiting. But I'm on the list for a MoVI M5, and I may switch.
Pretty footage. But I saw at least one focus hunt in there.
Apropos, GH3 in my experience is very easy to fly in manual focus. Just google “hyper focal” and you’ll be happy.
Plus, learn to love the ND filter. Gets you great shutter speeds even in bright daylight. I use two different ones (.9x or...
