Dawn over the reservoir at Magny-le-Hongre in Marne-la-Vallée, France.

The music is 'Morning' from Peer Gynt by Grieg. Cliché I know, but still so appropriate for the magical mood of the crisp, frosty, winter morning and that 'Moment of Creation Sunrise'.

Yesterday with the GH2 and CineStar 6

Cheers,
Jeff

Jeff, that's very impressive. Just like a moving xmas card!!!! If it wasnt for the blue sky in parts it would almost be black & white.....the snow exposure is very good, most cameras shut down in bright conditions, causing grey snow, so well done on that mate. Its very smooth & I loved the height you attained (your braver than me).
Great result mate..what stabilisation did you use on the gimbal?

It was beautiful morning today so had to shoot something on the way to work.

Exposure was all manual. I usually meter on the blue sky and hope that no dark clouds roll through.
I'm using a Cinestar Gimbal, but the MK compensation is on 0.

Cheers,
Jeff

Nice One. I like to see imaginative filming.
What camera were you using? How much post prod did you do? I am finding that the Sony NEX-5n ALWAYS requires a touch of sharpening to make it look HD.

So ... er ... you work in the middle of an arctic wilderness then. Right?

stpfl, I love your video. The rear shots from the plane look great, like it's been pursued aggressively, as in a car chase, by the octocopter - looks quite sinister.

I made this video, not at all dramatic, yesterday to test the anti-jello steps I'd taken on a new xAircraft hexa frame with a Gopro HD camera. I haven't used a Gopro for ages, but I want to try the Gopro 2 so I decided to rejig one of my setups with that in mind to make sure it works out before I buy one.

Similar to how I meter for airshows, but I either use the blue sky & go 1 1/2 stops over or use the green grass. So what stabilisation are you actually using if the MK isnt controlling it?

CineStar 6 returns to the Sheep Pasture to try out some new props and gain settings on the WKM...

P.S. I see Youtube has added some artifacts to the video as part of their post upload "processing", the little glitches I see here and there aren't in the original!

Was this with the abused NEX-5n? Because, aside from the YouTube and compression blotches, this has the same 'a-bit-soft-and-not-quite-HD' feel to it that I see with my NEX-5n with the 18-55 kit zoom. Trees are represented with a sort of soft fuzz, rather than a tight bunch of tiny branches and nothing has a sharp edge. I am trying really hard to like the NEX-5n because it is just the right size and weight for the MR but the image quality is just too poor.

Your flight and mount stability look very good.

Jeff, you're brave out there in the snow! Your home from above does look wicked, loved it.

Ken, thanks for the info on the LED's, I also run mine off 4s packs. As for your film looking soft, all I can say its a good job I dont post any footage from my 3ccd panasonic....yours is far sharper than mine !

Good. Thanks for that. The 'soft' comments were not so much a criticism as an acknowledgement of what I detect in the resolution of images produced by the 5n. I have an HDC-SD9 3ccd Panasonic that also looks a bit soft but have been considering stopping the whole video-enabled-stills-camera approach and reverting to a dedicated video camcorder. But which one? Your comment reaffirms my suspicion that consumer camcorders still lag behind DSLR/ILC's etc. in terms of outright image resolution.

And yes, Jeff's place looks stunning anytime and from any angle. What else could one expect living in 'God's Country'? (Montana for the uneducated or the religiously blighted).

This was done with a brand new 5N, only the second time it's been in the air. I just went backwards through the various versions of the file, the youtube one is definitely soft, much more so than the same file appears on the 22 inch flat screen attached to the computer I do the editing on. Going back to the original files that were carved up to create the video it looks a bit better there as well but you're right about the lens, it just isn't as crisp as it could be. I can understand losing some resolution in the editing and posting to you tube process, I've noticed videos look much better on Vimeo so I don't believe they crunch the files as badly as youtube does on the upload.

The other thing I notice about the 5N is the autofocus sometimes has a hard time either keeping up with the motion of the camera through the air or simply deciding what it should focus on with the camera moving, I notice I get much sharper imaging in a hover with the camera relatively stationary. Yesterday I was looking at alternative lenses for the 5N and there isn't that much available although I did see a Carl Zeiss lens for it but at $999 it costs 150% the price of the 5N itself!

It is a great form factor for APV use and considering everything else I've tried that isn't insanely expensive, it's a pretty good compromise. If I were really concerned about the end result I'd be doing it as a business with insurance to cover the gear and using something like a NEX FS100. AS things stand right now, the 5N is the biggest thing I can easily fit on the AV130 hanging under the CineStar and still get reasonable video out of it.

Mombasa, seems we both have the same panasonic. Apart from the colours seeming over saturated, how do you find your SD9 as regards vibration???
