Align M690

A few more videos not seen before, that is certainly impressive flying on the M480L
Also note the flight time on the M690L was 7 mins with GH4
The landing gear skids to me seem a bit on the small side?

I don't think it would be too difficult to change the gear skids for something a bit longer if necessary :untroubled:

It would be interesting to know what Lipo they actually had on the 690 for that flight with the GH4. All the weights & flight times on the 480 mentioned on Facebook always seem to mention small-ish 5200mAh packs.

Quoting an unofficial source on FB
"The official spec has not been published yet. But I'll answer what we know so far: 800-900mm class, M480L arms are 225mm in front and 345mm in back, M690L arms are 345mm all around. AUW with 6s-5200mah lipo and G3-GH and Panasonic GH4 is 5.4kg. Gimbal is around 1.1kg, Motors are 4213 370kv. Total amp draw at 5.4kg is little over 40 amps at forward flight, and around 20 amps at hover."

Something else I found interesting

Again quoting the same unofficial FB source
"I know what you mean, in Some Countries, strictly Limited Flying Weight or requires some License, Whatever, AUW of M690 will not get over 7Kg with 2 Packs of LiPo."

I also read that 'as yet' their FC does not have any algorithm to account for a motor loss as per DJI Wookong on a hex.

That's kind of a big deal. I had to fly a rotor back to launch point two weeks ago with only 7 of 8 motors functioning. Had that not been possible the end result would have been disaster instead of a basic parts replacement job. The price of that gimbal sounds pretty good.

The M690 will be a bit of a no brainer hex if they do add the algorithm for a lost motor,.
Also it can be turned into a quad also, just wondering then why the 480 has 223mm arms in front if the hex is the same size all around.
The gimbal will be very interesting, and if it works should sell like hot cakes, especially as it can handle any lens.

My thoughts exactly.

If I'm being totally candid I might as well say that I've already prordered a M690 & G3 gimbal.

My train of thought was that if I find the front arms & props end up in shot the shorter arms would be cheap enough to get & swap.

Also as the gimbal will work stand alone with various cameras and lenses (with tuning but without being linked to the FC) I thought I could use a Wookong as a FC on the frame until Align got their 'motor out' algorithm sorted on theirs.

Hopefully that all makes sense

Seems that the M690 will be 100g heavier than the s900..

M690L Specification:
Overall Diameter:900mm
Main Rotor Blade Length:179mm (7 inches)
Main Rotor Diameter:391mm
Height:446mm
Weight(Without Battery):3400g
Maximum load (With Battery):5500g

M480L Specification:
Overall Diameter:800mm
Main Rotor Blade Length:190mm (7.5 inches)
Main Rotor Diameter:416mm
Height:430mm
Weight(Without Battery):2700g
Maximum load (With Battery):4500g

Yup I saw that, but hoping it's more efficient and doesn't neet as big lipo's.
I bet taking the canopy off saves a few grams

Somewhat confusingly there seems to be lots of speculation as to what these weights mean.
Regardless of this they are quoting that a m690 gh gimbal and gh4's flight time as 8 mins but on a 5200mAh lipo, with a suggestion of a 10-12000mAh as big as it can carry so I think there will be room to manoeuvre the m690 under 7kg with a the gimbal, gh4, & reasonable size lipo

The 480 was Flying for 7:30 secs on 1 x 5200 mAh 6S all in GPS (landing at 21.7V) in the video at the start and it was 5.4kgs AUW inc gimbal/camera.
The 690 is 700g heavier than the 480 and 1" less prop size so I would imagine that it would not get near 7.5 mins with the same lipo, I am assuming that they have the same motors.

If you took 800g for a 5200mAh lipo, the max size you could prob fly with is 10,000 mAh and "Just maybe" be under 7kg, but that is probably a bare minimum setup without any extras.

I'm certainly not racing in blindly buying when when still wait for real proof that it does what Align says...

I was told just how awesome the two machines are by the local importer shop a couple of weekends ago. It can do this and that at and all at commercial quality... He has never done an aerial photography or video job - just flying helis and selling lots of stuff. I replied that we were still yet to see quality aerial footage from/on the machine. I also pointed out that those that have not done real commercial quality shooting and just run around with a Gopro doing what they think is commercial quality will always blindly race off and buy a machine based on sales and marketing hype, rather than real proof ;)
I want to see one of the aerial videography greats fly one and show what it's like - more than a fantastic 3D heli pilot showing how it flies!

Another observation. When I have been involved with serious commercial work, you need serious kit sometimes just to be taken seriously. For example - on a nice fine day, a good point and shoot camera may take a similar photo to someone carrying a Canon 5Diii or 1D etc. But only one will be seen as a professional - because he has a professional camera (even if he can't drive it lol). Now... after watching the promo build video of the 690 I thought the last bit when they clip the lexan body on the top reminded me of my 1980'd Tamiya rc car bodies! Plastic white u/c clamps... it still looked toy-ish!

Now don't down me over this... I've had 10 Align helis and I started 8 years ago shooting under one so I known than can create good stuff!
I am looking at test-flying the first one that arrives here for a commercial friend (other end of the country) who is looking for a cheaper machine for "high-risk" work... just in case... I hope it is as good as the hype but I really do want to see real proof shot by a really good aerial specialist...

Well there are more and more videos appearing, just Facebook "Align Multicopters" and you will see ones added (granted horizon is off a bit).

The main reason I am interested in this product is that it will be under 7KGs and carry a GH4 "with various lenses" and the gimbal does NOT require association with the Flight Controller, I don't really care how cheap looking it looks, although I do not think it does.
If its Align it will probably be well thought out and a quality product, the flight controller may be a bit worrying though in its initial release that should get better.
Think that they have seen a very big market open up, and they want a piece of it.

Very promising indeed. Maybe once Align enter the market seriously, it will make DJI buck up their ideas.

I think I might have to pick up the GH4 Gimbal. Looks like a nice little unit, if they can get the horizon issue fixed I think it would be a great alternative to the zenmuse. Escpecially that you don't need a FC to run the Gimbal like Zenmuse does.

My 690 arrived yesterday, I'm still waiting for my 5D gimbal but that should be with me next week.
Looking through the kit, all I can say is that the build quality is stunning, it's a work of art.
I hope to build it tomorrow evening and I may have it up for a test flight on Sunday. I'll be using a modified Taranis for TX and the Align VTX and a black pearl for GS.

As soon as I get the gimbal I can mount the camera, weigh it and get my Ops manual off to EuroUSC for my acceptance test. Hopefully this carrying my 5D and my F550 carrying my GoPro4, I should be able to cover most requests for AP work.
