Hoverfly Video thread

I thought this was southern France until I wikipedia'd it. Lovely crystal clear even through the Vimeo compression - must be awesome looking on computer. Nex5N? LOS?

Well since no one else is posting, here's one I took yesterday. GoPro2 on wide setting. MP4 footage was clipped in Cineform, each clip saved as AVI, then each clip run through warp stabilizer in After Effects at default setting (it actually DOES "warp" right in the beginning). Finally it was assembled in Cyberlink Power Director 10 and outputted as MP4. As you can see I'm still experimenting with workflow while I save up my pennies for a MAC. Can't wait for the GoPro3 Black Edition to arrive on the doorstep - should be a nice jump in quality compared to Hero2 and the wifi with an i-pad is intriguing tho the 600 ft range may be a tad overstated.

George - Hoverfly

The video was shot from the DIY "H" quad. I flew in AH mode for all clips with a DIY 15 degree gimbal on the front. 15 degrees is more than adequate if you are flying in AH. I love AH. Some guys don't like to fly with it. It's a personal preference but in my case I designed this particular craft around it so I use it.

When putting together the gimbal I tried at least 3 different servos. At one end was the Hyperion wing servos which fit the best but output was jumpy on any setting and ultimately unusable. On the other end was the Hitek HS5245Mg http://www.servocity.com/html/hs-5245mg_digital_mini.html which were the smoothest and the ones I kept. It seems like the HFP board "likes" certain servos more than others, but that is just my opinion based on this one gimbal.

As far as servo adjustments go, I find you are either going to get a gimbal that reacts fast enough but "jumpy" or one that is totally smooth but shows some tilt in the footage. I set it in between based on 3-5 flights then process the video as I explained above to eliminate the inevitable.

Finally, this is the first craft of ANY form factor, that I have built, that flies with enough authority in wind. If the craft is bouncing all over the place a gimbal or software is not going to help that much. Believe me I've built and flown enough of THOSE to know.

Bart, congrats mate...that's superb.

I agree the cut-away of the fish was a nice touch, it's a bit off footage you can keep as stock footage as well.....can be used multiple times!
Smoothly flown as well...bonus ;)

thanks for the nice words guys. the pool wasn't clean enough to include a high shot, the pool water was dirtier than the pond. i put the fish in there just to break up a long shot, it could have been used in its full length but it was too slow and long to fit the video. i just have to soften up the photo transitions and it'll be ready to go. if i have time i'll try to post that one shot without any post-stab done to it. it's probably the best footage i've been able to get so far.
