Taking off/landing on a moving ship

Actually a heli benefits from having a headwind- it has more lift that way. Have a look at translational lift. Also a full sized heli is affected less by the turbulence coming of the back of a big structure than one of our multirotors. There are numerous other reasons for having the pad at the...

Taking off/landing on a moving ship

Not necessarily a good idea due to wind rota and turbulence. With regards to this you are almost better landing on the bow where the wind is likely to be consistent and thus can take account of.

Taking off/landing on a moving ship

Hi Jack, never done it but I suspect that if you land slowly in Atti mode, as the aircraft touches skid tip first, the boat will start to 'take over' driving the aircraft forward. This will then allow you to slowly decrease throttle and allow the aircraft to level. Admittedly that is nothing...

    MK to DJI..

If you are looking at the Zenmuse gimbal- which if you are happy on being limited to one camera and one lens then they are unbeatable. However if you want to fly both the 5D and GH4 then the Movi M5 is the way to go and once tuned, which is very easy on the Movi range, it will pretty much match...

    UK night flying?

Depends how you write it. I have permission to fly at night that allows me to fly as per during the day.

    UK night flying?

If this is for commercial work then it matters not about it being private land but everything to do with your permissions. I think that on your permission it will probably say during daylight hours or words to that effect when you get it. In real terms that means half an hour before sunrise...

    Octo with overlaping propeller arcs

Not sure how much more efficient it will be given that most lift is generated by the tips I believe.

Permission to fly within 10m of the public and to 600ft

Last year the CAA in the UK stated that they would introduce a new safety case system whereby people could get year long permissions to operate with less restrictions than those stipulated in the Air Navigation Order (normally 50m separation distance and 400ft vertical). We have just had our...

    MK to DJI..

I prefer the way an X8 handles over a flat 8- ie more stability in the wind. However both the S1000 and Skyjib X8 are great aircraft. The Skyjib will require a lot of work building it unless you pay extra to have it RTF from Aeronavics or whoever. Personally I think the Skyjib is the nicer...

    looking for recommendation...

Hmm that seems odd, so you recommend an APS-C camera over full frame? There may well be good reasons for this but in general, full frame sensors seem to be the preferred choice. The real thing to do here before you even consider what airframe you are going to aim at is to sort out the camera...

RTF vs ATF for a newbie...?

I was at a meeting on Fri with the Department for Transport and the CAA- even they now realise that the battle against the word Drone is lost. It is now official, they are drones!

iOSD and 25mW video Tx help

Adding to my last, the vast majority of operators in the UK do not stick to 25mw from what I have seen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

iOSD and 25mW video Tx help

It would have to go to court first before kit was taken from you I would think but that's not really the point. The point really being that over 25mw is illegal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

iOSD and 25mW video Tx help

Joseph, 25mw is the legal limit so flying your 200mw is against the law. The scary bit: if you get caught they can impose a hefty fine and confiscate all associated kit I believe. The reality: how you would ever get caught, I don't know and Ofcom have all but said that they are not very...

    Lipos: IR or puffiness?

Puffing means they have degenerated and that they are not very safe. I would not use these or if you do make sure you charge in a very good fire proof location.

    FAA may get Drones Right.

There is an awful lot of 'the sky is falling on us' with regards to the FAA's approach. Now I will be the first to admit that I haven't followed what is going on in any detail but given the way the rest of the world is with regard drones and the reality of the risk they actually pose (rather...
