hi all, i do some aerial video work for a concert promotion company, and the xm series is looking especially appealing to me due to its portability (i may be lugging it through a lot of airports.) im confused though - having done the math already on the adx-3 with an av130 - i thought i should be able to carry my canon 500d on that? the reason i ask is because the product guide keeps trying to push me towards a skyjib, and i really dont want that frame.. i want the y6 xm if it will carry my 500d - any ideas? i know the adx-3 will..

I don't know why they would push to the Skyjib. The Ym 6 will be more than enough, just run a bit bigger motors if your worried. That frame looks good, but if I were going to spend that kind of money on a brand new developed frame than I would probably wait at least a month after release. That system I'm sure have a couple querks. Also you will need to check the weight of the frame to make sure you don't build up to much weight... If it's to heavy you will lose a lot of flight time burning up MAH on six motors. Just do your homework and you will be good.

I'm really liking the Ym to looks cool.

Droidworx the new frames and website are great. I do have a question. Will there be an upgrade path for as old users. Or will you sever the ties with the past?

Will you offer upgrade packages to your old frames?

Skyjib 8 V2 ordered! Cant wait to build it.

Aye Up Ryan.

It would be great if you could start a new build thread within the forum when your new baby arrives. It will be great to get first impressions from a customers point of view on the while process, from ordering to that first tentative lift off..

I am green ;-)

Aye Up ctrlfreq.

I fly a ADX3 HL and canon 550d / 10/22 lens combo with video TX and 100000 mah of batteries no problem. max flight time 12 mins but ususlly fly only 6-8 when on a shoot.

I know you are quite new on here so dont really know how DW operate. They aint like any other small company these days who just throw a new design together and let the customers to the testing. Every detail is thought out and planned to the finest detail. Sure there may me the odd thing that gets reported back as not ideal, but you wont find a company in this sector that jumps on issues as quick as DW.

If I had the funds I would have not hesitation in ordering a new frame now.. Just wish I could get a few more jobs in so I can order my SJLX4..

RRH. I am sure there are upgrade paths for the older frames. The newly named VM is a newer version of the AD series. What you got and what do you want to upgrade?

Dave is 100% correct, DW do support thier customers. I had one of the first SJ8's in the UK & within a couple of weeks a new delivery of all 8 arms came to my door...not that I know what was wrong with the old ones! great people, superb products.

Yeap, they send me new center sections and crash cage for my SJ8 months after purchase for free. Plus you won't find friendlier people on the phone or email.

thanks a lot Dave - its your youtube videos that inspired me to go y6, and your videos that made me think i could do it with the ym. i know theyre a great company, thats a lot to do with why im saving nearly 3k more to buy their frame when im able (gonna try REALLY hard to get the company i work for to buy it for me.. they may =D )

p.s. - 6-8 minute flight times are just about perfect for me when filming.

one last question and ill let you be for a while - on the 550d - can you recommend a good all purpose/lightweight lens?

thanks again!

Thanks for the compliments on my Y6 . I just love flying mine not just for work but also for fun. I have just totally rebuilt my STD after many happy hours flying her. Unfortunately I need to sell her hence the rebuild as i need a second machine capable of carrying a 5D.. Any takers?

BTW all my MRs are now WKM. Have looked at the YS but I just know the WKM works for me.

Good and light weight are hard to achieve. I fly the Canon 10/22. I have flow the Tameron 11/25 which has some good reviews and was flying it for a production company so I guess they thought it was a good lens. I went for the canon as it was lighter, more money but I think it just had the heads over the Tameron in review terms..

Thanks! Yes - we'll be adding upgrade packages to the shop next week - sorry to have not been clear about that. We've made the new models and components as compatible as possible with the previous versions and the AD series. It takes a moment to describe it all properly but next week that should be finalized. Some of the components are already included in the accessory sections of the series. Also spare parts for previous versions will be available for as long as there are previous version craft flying around... :tennis:

Hi! Thanks for having explored our product guide! You will be perfectly fine with the XM-X3 (which happens to be one of my personal favorites as well) - the Canon 500D comes in just under 500 grams so no probs. I wonder why you got the SkyJib showing up as recommendation..? I just checked - if you follow the weight class of the camera 250-500 grams, the XM-6 (or X3) does show up and also if you follow the weight class 500 grams - 1kg. In this second class the SkyJib6 Lite is also included - this model would offer more growth potential if you'd already be pushing the 1kg (camera weight) and envision to move toward larger cameras in the future. But as I said the XM-6 (thus also X3) is mentioned as a suitable model.

Maybe you followed the DSLR 1-1.9kg camera class...? This shows a picture of a Canon so would be understandable... For the larger DSLR's like the Canon 5D and 7D we do recommend the SkyJib Lite - especially if you'd want some flexibility with lenses. The AD-8 used to be a bit on the 'light' side for these cameras. Better here to use a slightly larger motor and 14" prop - the XM series allow for up to 13" props. We've configured an AXi2820/18 with AXi and tested it with a 14" Gemfan prop - on this engine this particular prop proved 20% more efficient than any other prop. Great combo! The SkyJib Lite consists of a core and gear rail assembly of the SkyJib combined with the XM landing gear and top. Positioned between the former AD and the SkyJibs this craft offers the perfect mix for this category cameras.

Just felt like explaining this a bit further - we do offer many different models so the guide will have to make sense. If any of you have recommendations on offering information more clearly we're always open for suggestions.

Thanks again!

Hey guys... I'm happy to represent the forum with an impartial visit to the factory one day (I'm 30 minutes away) ;)

I suspect a VM-6 may be finding my shed in the next month or so... :nevreness:

It is great to see DW here on the forum. Keep it up Rob + Linda... you are almost Kiwis now!

Pete

Haha, thanks Pete! Almost Kiwis... You heard Nic - he's to blame for the bloody possums, not me! :tennis: Good speaking with you yesterday - will see you soon! Happy weekend... got some good flying weather today...

Ok, I've got a future project in mind which I would really like to use droidworx airframes on. The airframe would need to be able to carry a minimum of a 2 axis camera mount system, possibly the Z15 or a PH system and an NEX 5n, I know a lot of airframes can carry that at this moment in time, however I would like a flying time of at least 30 minutes. If I went with an SJ8 and loaded up with batteries would I get that?

There is another requirement but the tech isn't in place yet so I would just have to do without for the moment.

Another consideration is stability in wind as well, as I could be operating in winds up to 20 mph. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Sorry, realised this prob not the place for this post so I will repost... Cheers.

Richard.

Richard, the SJ8 is a heavy girl & we use 4 x 4s 4000ma lipos for about 12 mins. It really depends on your motors to be honest. I use 2820 motors & they are a bit greedy, its an overkill for our use, but I thought ahead & wanted to be able to carry a very wide range of cameras. I dont think I have EVER gone above 70% throttle!!!! Total thrust is about 18Kg!!!
Hope that helps in some way.

Thanks macgrafs, it helps a little. I know the SJ8 can carry a lot, hence the reason why I was thinking of putting a relatively light weight camera and gimbal system onboard and using the remaining payload capacity to load up with batteries to increase flight duration. I realise there will be a point at which increasing weight with batteries will be counter productive with regards to extending the flying time. I'm basically brainstorming and being a bit hopeful and optimistic. :s
