Bootcamp for mac...help

There are no guarantees but this works 95% of the time.

I would still start a backup routine after the restore. It is possible the HD is starting to fail. With a backup using TimeMachine it is really easy to restore to a new drive or a new computer if yours is lost or fatally wounded in a fire lightening strike or whatever. As long as your BU disc was not with it as well.

Silicone can be a pain but in the end it makes a lot of things possible like RC multi rotors.

Olof,

what is the correct way to use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS extended journaled volume?

in disk utility I can select Macintosh HD or 320.07gb Fujitsu

then there's the options
first aid
erase
partition
restore

thinks it's erase but just want to be sure.

Is it better to do it that way, or just do a reinstall of the OS X and then restore?

You could select either, as long as they are the same. If there are multiple partitions then you have to choose the 320.07gb Fujitsu.

You
don't have your BU drive hooked to the Mac now right. You don't want to format that.

I assume you are booting from the install DVD that cam with the mac.

Once you have formatted the drive install the OS and when you boot for the first time it should ask if you want to transfer information from another mac or time machine backup. Choose the time machine backup, it should be hooked up to the Mac now, if not hook it up and it should show up in the dialog box.

Follow the instructions and you should be fine.

Not the best way to spend a weekend. Well hopefully the rest of the weekend will be better for you.

Before i do this let me ask you this.

When I click on Macintosh HD and hit command I, it reads 69.19gb on disk. When I click the info on the external HD, it reads 38.82gb on disk.

Do I have a full back up?

If you click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar.

Does it say something like:

"Latest backup to (name of drive)
January 6, 2013"

If it does then you are OK. Time machine does compress data so it may be quite a bit smaller than the original.

You can also look at the backup in finder.

Just double click on the BU drive and then explore the folders in the backups folder, they should be identical to the original drive, once you get down to the Macintosh HD.

I restarted the computer with the install disc in it and holding down the C key. Doesn't seem to be doing anything. I'm at the white apple screen and with the little thing spinning that looks like he outline of the sun.

Been holding it for a while.

Edit...ok here we go....it's going through. Erased the Mac HD and the Fujitsu, now installing OS X

Olof,

I'm restoring from time machine right now. After this, do I have to install the bundled application disc, or is that taken care if through the restore?

I don't think 6GB is big enough for the Windows install. Try increasing the bootcamp partition in the mac before re installing. 25GB should be good.

I use a 60 GB partition for my Windows 7 installs.

how do I get out of this windows install and get back to OS X ? That's the only way to increase the partition right?

i could have swore it automatically was supposed to set 20gb aside for the partition

Ok so this time I went into bootcamp assistant and made the partition 32gb. I put the windows disk in, installed it. Still getting the same black screen when it reboots saying the disk error. I click enter and it's trying to setup windows again.

Whats going on here? This whole ordeal has been a big PITA

It is possible you have a bad install disc for Windows.

Where did you get it?

If it is from a local store ask for a new one.

I usually download a disc image for a Windows installer. Windows 7 is about $45 downloaded complete with a certificate. And this is just for Bootcamp.

XP is not supported by Bootcamp 4 or 5.

I have used it on older systems but try 7 if you have Bootcamp v4 or later on your mac.

Here is a good article on installing bootcamp.

Try this from the same dealer, they may let you swap:

olof,

I have bootcamp 3

I think my disk may not have the correct service pack.
