    Introduce Yourself

Hello there, Petr here. After being an RC hobbyist for a few years (surface and airplanes), I read an article about this Czech aerial photography company called Vertical Images (these guys are my friends now, I went to visit them last year) and was sold on the idea. My very first drone was...

Aerial video and photography using drones

@Roger Apolinar Awesome, I know that a lot of work goes into these and can appreciate when someone invests the time. What shutter speed did you use in this one? Looks like 1.5 sec?

    Newbie's Frist Videos

@Roger Apolinar , love the video, your framing does suggest your cinematographer background, and seems like you guys are having a ton of fun with your machine. The arrival of the Inspire was a revolution in RTF machines. This one was the first really useful platform that did not require custom...

    @camflite , that's a cute copilot:) Nice work.

    Whizz Kids Drone School

@Jeff Shoults I think your list is just about right. I like the Nano QX a lot, but it is a little twitchy for a 9 year old. However, if you bind it to a decent Spektrum controller and adjust expos, you can tame them down a lot. I would also have a look at Zeyrok.

Can a hobbyist fly FPV at a home course?

@Catacyst , you make some really good points, however, FPV racing on a closed course/private property would be very difficult to prosecute, as it is technically not really illegal (at least I am not aware of any actual law against it). I think there are a few lawyers just waiting for the FAA to...

    Phantom 3 case suggestions

@Booda , I have used a GoProfessional case for the P2 and liked it. For my P3 I got the DJI hard shell backpack and love it. It makes it easy to transport, protects the copter well, and can be taken on an airplane as a carry-on. I did use some black tape to cover the big DJI logo on it, so it's...

Dropgate - Inspires and Phantoms dropping out of the sky

@droneadmin When I log out, I see the images full size. I can only see thumbnails when logged in, and when I click them. I get the message that I don't have permission to view the media.

Blackmagic Design Micro Cinema Camera gimbal

Hi @Andrew Prince , thank you for joining in and congratulations on passing your exam. The Black Magic Micro seems to have been created for UAS aerial videography, I've seen the camera, but have not had an opportunity to fly it yet. I'm actually surprised that DJI has not come out with a gimbal...

    Where's Papa

Hi @Thomas , thank you for your feedback, we asked for it and really appreciate any input that helps us understand what you guys think about the show and how to make it even better . As the drone tech became more affordable and easier to master over time, we are trying to evolve the Podcast and...

    Thank you.

Hi @Jay C. , welcome to DV, congrats on your new machine. I know that some photographers look down the Phantoms as a "toy", I think that the P3 is a very capable machine, portable, easy to work with, and relatively affordable. I'm sure you'll have fun discovering what it can do for you. Let us...

Dropgate - Inspires and Phantoms dropping out of the sky

Nope, maybe @droneadmin can help us with this one, it just says I don't have a permission to view it.

Dropgate - Inspires and Phantoms dropping out of the sky

@John Locke , I agree that pressing the button to check the battery should not reset the timer. for some reason the picture does not open, can you, please, post full size, I'd really like to see it.

    Abstract snow video

Thanks @bkeip , cool effect, and good to see some old fashion drone video:) My first machine was a DJI F450 with GoPro Hero3, no gimbal. This was in dark ages, before the H3-2D gimbal was introduced at compelling $700 a bit over two years ago. It's amazing to see that now you can get a complete...

How are you doing commercial work without a pilot license?

I think we'll take what we can get. The 2Kg or less category had no really good commercially viable machines until couple of years ago. Looking at that category now, I can definitely name a few. Are they good enough for professional motion picture production? Probably not, but they are a great...

    Transmitter Recommendation

I agree with @maxx4wd on the Futaba, very universal, very reliable. Racing guys seem to like the Taranis a lot for it's good price and open source UI.

    Insurance requirements

That's a good question, I am not really sure whether the drone racers are required to carry any insurance. The AMA insurance covers the damage to the aircraft, but I am yet to hear someone using it successfully to cover a racing drone crash, as the drone races are usually not on Ama sanctioned...

    Barkhamsted CT Sunrise Panorama

A nice sunrise panorama from Barkhamsted CT. Captured with DJI Inspire1/X3, combined from 75 photos: 15 tiles, 5-photo AEB/HDR each.

Dropgate - Inspires and Phantoms dropping out of the sky

Really good info, @John Locke, seems like some 1.6 people have these issues too (more on Inspire than Phantom). I am on 1.6, and my four battery test was done with this. I agree with you that the aircraft/battery should not be allowed to shut down mid-air, no matter what the capacity. I'd rather...
