Wow! So they charge $4000 for the software, on top of the $25k for the machine? Is that per-seat, or per-company?

Pixhawk the new flight controller from 3DR

This is good advice. I always save a trail of parameter files that I can go back to. You don't even need to take a photo. Go to the Full Parameter List, and just save the parameter file. Then you can name it something like "Droidworx Hexa, AC3.1.5 V1.1.param" Or something like that. If you...

$65K drone crashed: why you should never touch your copter while it is airborne :)

That was a specific response to a specific question by another user. He was asking about what options there are in case of systems failures. My response was about what is possible to be done. Whether or not one system or another does everything else perfectly should not prevent people from...

    Anyone using Droidplanner?

Those problems are likely to be tuning errors, so a user problem, not the program. You can stick the system on any size machine you want. It could be set up to fly a Blackhawk if you were so inclined. ;)

$65K drone crashed: why you should never touch your copter while it is airborne :)

You seem to want to talk about Arducopter vs. others. The point of my post was about user skill and training. We don't know why it wasn't responding to user's input. Obviously the Tx/Rx was working or he couldn't have armed and taken off. But after that, nobody knows. And that's a problem...

$65K drone crashed: why you should never touch your copter while it is airborne :)

I never said Arducopter was perfect. They are all going to have problems. The difference is in how you deal with things. You can hide things <cough>DJI A2 Firmware<cough> and leave people in the dark. Or fess up, fix the problem, tell everybody what happened, and move on. And it was me that...

$65K drone crashed: why you should never touch your copter while it is airborne :)

IMO, a big part of the problem with this whole situation is that so many of these controllers that are more or less Plug and Play do nothing to educate their users, even advanced users, how these systems actually work. Worse than that, they actually obfuscate the situation, actively hiding what...

Thanks man. Nice blog post too.

Tethered MR Flights - does anyone use this technique

I design and build industrial automatic wire winders (with tension control) in my day job. Seems like it would be a great application in this case. Could keep a nice light tension on the line, with no slack to flap around in the wind.

Very cool! You should make a blog post of that on DIYDrones.

    New $579 6s Battery

You also need to make sure that your full throttle is below the maximum rating of the battery, not just hover. Some batteries will have a published maximum C rating. Some do not. Some publish the maximum C rating as if it was the continuous rating <cough looking at you Maxamps>...

    New $579 6s Battery

Wow that's big! I'm now building an 800 size gasser heli which I'll be putting a Pixhawk on. I will definitely be trying to see if I can hang a camera from it and eliminate the vibe problems that have plagued other attempts at this. Should be able to. Could probably build a heli that could...

Video of what happens sometimes when you use a beta

Do you have a log of that? I wouldn't have expected a Release Candidate to fail that badly. Need to get the data back to the team.

    A2 2.2 Upgrade Guinea Pig

As I posted on RCG, I'd like to discuss that issue: This is an interesting post, and I'd like to discuss it in an hard-ware agnostic fashion. I've been pushing for a feature like this in our software, but there's a lot of resistance. Some for the reasons you state, but mostly because people...

    A2 2.2 Upgrade Guinea Pig

You should never use RC's unless you know exactly what you are doing. We get users on RCG just loading whatever code all willy-nilly and I don't like it, but nothing I can do to stop it. Then on the otherhand, we have the Chinese producing Phantom-like quadcopters, RTF, using our code with...

Pixhawk the new flight controller from 3DR

My H8 design which worked very well was "inspired" by the Falcon. Trick was avoiding their patent, but I was able to. Why did you find it was hard to transport, I thought it folded up?

    A2 2.2 Upgrade Guinea Pig

How exactly is it unmature? I have 5 of them going, and they all just work. I have one machine that I use for mapping that has more than 5 hours of airtime, and 50+ km in full hand-off auto mode flight, without a single issue. Another one is flying a 17lb AUW 600 size helicopter with a Nex...

Pixhawk the new flight controller from 3DR

Yes, I've also had this exact same thing happen to me. I had an Octocopter, with batteries strapped to the landing gear, which lost power at altitude and freefell. It flipped right over and came straight down like an arrow. I think it's more about aerodynamics, but I couldn't even hazard a...

Pixhawk the new flight controller from 3DR

I'm not following what you're talking about with PID setup for lift-off vs. hovering? Is this something with other flight controllers? I've never heard of this issue with ours. About the CG: Some people think that having a low CG helps with natural stability, since the weight will "hang"...

Transitioning from DJI to 3DR - Learning Curve?

What exactly does "fly nicely" mean? If you are talking about the fact that Naza filters and dampens the pilots inputs, we'll have that on the next release, 3.2. A lot of people in the market actually hate this about the Naza. Some love it. So we've added it as an optional function. If "fly...
