Two drones almost collide with NYPD chopper

Sorry, I have to laugh.... I've been into RC for 20 years. 15 years ago, the old codgers in my club said the EXACT same thing about ARF RC airplanes. :highly_amused: Your Skyjib is an ARF. ;) Some things never change. But I agree. Back in the day, it still took 10-20 hours to assemble...

Goggles dangerous, hardly but your big heli's are out to get you!

A helicopter can only jump up in a split second if the rotor is already spinning. That is my point. I'm typically standing at least 100 feet away from my helicopters when the rotors are running.

Goggles dangerous, hardly but your big heli's are out to get you!

Are you really going to argue that something like this is safe on set? How did it go from idle to flying in a split second? That has to take a couple seconds at least. That's one difference with Multirotors that make them dangerous. They can go from stopped to in your face in a split...

bad day for me and my Octo T1000 Ironman

You don't need independent LiPos, though it is one good solution. What you need is an independent final voltage regulation going into the Pixhawk (or APM, or whatever flight controller). You can have one LiPo, and then use the Power Module to power the Pixhawk, and a BEC for the servos. Or one...

Goggles dangerous, hardly but your big heli's are out to get you!

But this is the thing... Those 28" blades can still kill you pretty quick. This is really like arguing which will make you deader. "Would you rather be hit by a Freightliner, or a Mack?" The large multis are plenty dangerous, and need to be treated with respect.

It's like juggling chainsaws. But the chainsaw jugglers at least acknowledge the fact that what they're doing is dangerous.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Or inverted funnels, etc...

bad day for me and my Octo T1000 Ironman

Sorry about your crash. It might not have been an over-current problem, but actually a voltage spike when the servos stopped. This is a known issue for helicopters and airplanes. Please see this thread, all of it applies to any servos on multirotors...

Goggles dangerous, hardly but your big heli's are out to get you!

There have been a number of deaths in recent years. Most of them are because of people flying dangerously. They fly much too close to themselves. Unfortunately that community can't seem to have a logical discussion about the issue. "He died doing what he loved. It was a freak accident. It...

3D Robotics (3DR) Iris Official Users' Thread

Do you put the camera on the front of the frame, or underneath?

3D Robotics (3DR) Iris Official Users' Thread

Yeah... It works as-is, but with a GoPro, it just doesn't have enough power. It flies with a payload, but barely. And the way the motor layout is done, it's an X but pinched in the pitch axis. So it can be pretty pitchy, and is made worse because of the lack of power. There's lots of reports...

3D Robotics (3DR) Iris Official Users' Thread

For the record, I don't have an Iris, never used one, but from what I hear, I don't recommend it. It does work, but it's marginal with a GoPro payload.

Gongrats to Aerial MOB and Mr. Kloner......well done

Heh, yeah. Funny thing is, I just go turned down. Apparently they only want to insure "proven reliable" systems like a DJI Phantom. :upset: Yeah buddy, there's nothing proven reliable about a Phantom, least of which is the pilot.

Gongrats to Aerial MOB and Mr. Kloner......well done

I would be all for the development of a proper UAV flight school with professional certification. As long as it's reasonable. Training would include airspace theory, radio communications, weather, etc. As well as practical knowledge of UAV control system design and theory. You wouldn't pass...

Gongrats to Aerial MOB and Mr. Kloner......well done

Well, there's always the AUVSI. This should have been the organization you wanted to work with. But apparently it's run by the big guys, and are working hand in hand with the FAA to lock out small-player operations.

Gongrats to Aerial MOB and Mr. Kloner......well done

I'm not so sure that one can state hobbyists have more mishaps than professionals. Maybe in total numbers, but not when you consider the situation statistically (number of incidents per number of commercial flights). From what I can see, way too many "professional" operators have as little...

FAA attempts to ban FPV Goggles

Yeah, last year was a nightmare travelling, they wouldn't let me bring my LiPos outbound. So I was screwed. Then I just about got two US Customs officers acting like jerks. I was told they're trying to shake you up, see if you're legit or not. I dunno. Then CATSA Xrayed my stuff while I was...

FAA attempts to ban FPV Goggles

I'm not an American, and don't travel with guns, but what other people are saying is that if you have a gun in your checked luggage, you must declare it. Then once declared, the TSA is not allowed to open your baggage without you being there. I guess you declare it, and then they'll do the...

FAA attempts to ban FPV Goggles

That's a great point. I recently had to fly with on a commercial flight with all my equipment. While going over the logistics of that, I discovered that some UAV operators (and simple photographers, etc.) have learned that the only sane way to travel on commercial flights within the US is to...

Gongrats to Aerial MOB and Mr. Kloner......well done

The FAA should talk to Transport Canada about whether or not they actually want people submitting paperwork for each and ever UAV flight. Transport Canada has regulations in place now, and are choking on the volume of paperwork being submitted.
