What's wrong with a GoPro2. I am shooting with a Panasonic HDC-TM 900 Lighter and better quality than a Canon 550D for video but it is very sensitive to vibration and it can shoot 1920x1080 60 Progressive. Staggering quality but only if you need it. AVCHD is PITA for editing. If you are shooting for Youtube and vimeo, then you just make work for yourself with a high end camera. GoPro2 could do all that and a lot more. Vimeo plays back better at 16x9 Std. definition for what it's worth. Saving weight is the number one priority IMHO.
GoPro2 can also shoot at 120 fps in a Wide standard definition mode. Another feature is that it comes with a waterproof housing. Way to go!!!
I am certainly going to get one.

I am excited about:
NEX7
New Canon DSLR shooting 4K

I currently am using
NEX5N - awesome little package for shooting 1080/60p! Great colors and super lightweight
FS100 - Good production level camera. Cuts well with F3 etc
GH2 - my go to camera when shooting for fun for myself, love this little guy. Wish it had 1080/60p! Stabilized lens is fantastic
5D - Pain in the *** as an aerial camera, rolling shutter issues, slow sensor refresh rate but beautiful image
EPIC - unbelievable quality but pain in the *** and gives me heart palpitations to fly it!

Denny i have no probs with the Gopro Gopro 2 for fun flying in good light conditions. Just when the light is bad Gopro is not an option anymore and i want 1080/60i.

Tabb thanks i think i will take a close look at the NEX7 and GH2. There is no news for the GH2 that they will bring out a new model ?

Thanks

What lens do you prefer for you NEX5 or NEX7 when you get it ? Standard that comes with it or a pancake ?

Thanks !

Personally I dont see the extra features of the Nex7 being that advantageous to AV. I have hardly any complaints with my Nex 5n. I had the GH2 and I must have got a defective one as I was not happy at all with the massive gradient banding. No moire was nice though. The Sony has moire but is rarely an issue for me, well, sometimes over water is annoying but.... If they only made a damn digital/analog converter that was super small and cheap so i didnt have to use an extra camera for FPV.

I emailed Ira at IftronTech about making a video transmitter with an HDMI input and analog output, he said they're working on it, FWIW

I flew close to 70 flights on Mon. Tues, Wed with my T2i and had the GoPro running occasionally just for fun. Image quality is pretty damn nice on the GoPro when the sun is just right. The T2i works great and gets along well as an aerial phot/video tool but it's heavy at this point compared to the Nex 5N with the fixed 16mm on it.

I'm with Yuri, it sure would be nice if the NEX plugged right into a video Tx for aerial work.

There are a lot of high end cameras that are nothing more than Male jewelry for most people working outside of the Pro video and film industry. Especially the 5D which is not much use unless it's shooting raw. I have a machine that lifts the Epic and it will get used no more than 6 times in the next twelve months. The 550D machine is in constant use almost every day that is flyable (Stills). The other panasonic machines work most weeks on pro video jobs. Sometimes the footage is uprezzed from 1920 to 2K. I see it as getting the most out of what you have for the least amount of expenditure. Full frame video cameras are great for racking focus pulls on the ground but when will you ever need that in the air? What you actually need is good depth of field. a near linear distortion free lens with image stab. built in.

When I see those heli shots where the heli climbs above a rolling road with the heat waves rising fromt he asphalt, I wonder if they are using a telephoto lens beyond our lift capacities. Imagine though, a 70-200 f2.8 with full second operator control. I totally agree for the most part it is not needed for AV/AP but it sure would be impressive if you used it right.

at the moment, the money's in residential real estate and commercial property stills hence the T2i/550D. video though I'm wondering if it's really the smart move given the weight and 30p limitation. it's what makes the GoPro such an attractive option with its analog video out and excellent picture quality.
then there''s the NEX 5N with the 16mm lens.....

can anyone quantify what I'd be giving up by going from the T2i to the NEX?
whats battery life like with the NEX?

thanks,
Bart

With the flood in Sony's factories I think the 5n with a Samyang lense is the best all-rounder for 2011.
If you don't want to use it as a camera and can lift the weight the new VG-20 produces higher quality video at 60p.
If you wanna mess with hacking, the 4 3rds GH2 rocks but not as stable.
Now if only that wide angle samyang gets released soon...

I think the AVCHD format takes some beating for quality, but if you don't have the latest Mac, then editing in FCP can be tricky. You need a codec converter like this one. VoliacHD from Shedworx. Http://www.shedworkx.com/voltaichd. If you're working in 1920x1080 50P or 60P then the file sizes are huge. Even so, AVCHD is compressed at about 5:1 so it has to be first decoded back to raw and then recompressed to a .mov file, so it takes quite some time. AVCHD lite is a similar problem.
It is no problem for Adobe Premier and After Effects. But you need a machine with some grunt.

I still cant make a decision although i am tending towards the NEX 5n or the NEX 7 once available. One of you mentioned that there is no big gain from the NEX 7 towards the NEX 5 ? Considering the adavanced sensor in the NEX 7 and the ISO values you guys dont think NEX 7 is worth a try ?

Thanks

Boris

I am in a similar dilemma as well. Nex5n now or wait for the Nex7.

Nex 5n has one stop lower noise and Nex 7 has one stop higher dynamic latitude.

We use GH2 with hack most in 1080p23 or 1080i 60 with hacked firmware so we get 40mbit capture. Picture is insane, colors perfect and it beats the nikon d7000 or cannon 600d in a hartbeat. Sony nex is fun, also good but i say go for GH2 if u can spare 1k money.

I am going to wait for the NEX 7 look at some reviews and than decide between the NEX 7 and the GH2.
