Overview Camera Market 13NOV2011

Boris, Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S. "with auto focus off" has widest view with/and OIS is best out there for DSLR. Better primes are out there but no OIS.
If your mount is real stabile 20mm 1.7f pancake is light prime and sharp. Evening or night shoots are great more forgiving w/o ois.

Hack is stable at high bitrate AVCHD 44 mbite in 1080/24p cinema mode. no 25p yet. 172 mbites second possible but not stable. ISO is up to 12000 in b/W for color clarity 8k. Other features coming every month. http://www.gh1-hack.info/wiki/PToolSoftware

Mjpg can be reduced frame rate to 2fps
for time lapse and thus compiled in camera. http://vimeo.com/31774555

Its like a mini Scarlet "well" but does have some rolling shutter like most DSLRs just less and some units have exposure banding and shadow banding. We got 1 out of 3 units. Better to buy as always from store that has no conditions return. It is hard to replicate in camera. and is random according to scenes. It is a hack so extra care like escs have to be respected or it will brick.

Other option

When my DJI CS "now" 8 is dialed in Ill fly my canon xf105 we us as a B-cam in production Tv work more than our DSLRS for video. OIS is best in class; 4.2.2 color space broadcast codec. zoom keeps focus which is handy to keep ship further away so people stop looking around in wedding funerals or sets if needed. 1kg weight. almost no moire or rolling shutter, Same codec as the new Canon c300. dual card recording. real HD 1080p sensor. The only down side is 60p in 720 only. But, the codec is so good it upscales to 1080p seamlessly. you can get 25p and 50p unit for your side of the pond also. Also high quality composite or component out for FPV.

XA10 is also great and smaller brother just the codec is not as strong or processor speed. But if you do web targeted video only it would work great. Nice blog on them here.

He is wrong about timelapse mode only 2fps per second limit it does 1 fps in 30p mode which is proper and makes great video timelapse in camera for play back like the new hack on the GH2. Good luck hunting.

I'm intending to use a Canon HV30 camcorder, about the same weight as the NEX-7 (with lens), and has composite video out as well as recording to standard HDV tape with a fair amount of frame modes, manual exposure lock, and lots of other options you'd want for aerial video. Not the best camera in the world, but I dare say the picture quality will far exceed the GoPro2 (though a bit heavier, about 650 grams).

okay i got the GH2 but couldnt play with it yet since i flew away for the weekend to a country i didnt want to take a brand new cam with :)

Monday i want to start with the altered firmware ! I am a little confused though are there two different firmware hacks out and which one is the better ones for my needs to only use the GH2 for filming ?

Thanks

Boris

Boris, you need to look in your tools menu and see if your new camera has the Dec 7th 1.1 version firmware. If so give it try and see if it is to your needs. It gives 1080p 25p which may be more important to you than a high bit rate hack. many are more than happy with a cleaner noise algorithm pani has fixed in their 1.1 update. If you do have new version it is not proven stabile with the current hacks but may soon. The link http://www.gh1-hack.info/wiki/PToolSoftware is clearist setup for hack which again is best to set at 44 mb compression. You would have to go back to v1 firmware to use the hacks. Stan

Okay thanks Stan,

i have 1.1 ver on it and will keep it that way until the current hack are stable for that version.

I am just confused because i cant find the 1080p 25p mode ?

I have 4 different Creative movie modes (Manual Movie mode, HBR, Cinema, Variable movie mode)

Normally under Manua movie mode i should find 1080p 25p or ?

Thanks

Boris

Boris, 25p is embedded in a 50i stream at 24mb/s AVCHD It has B frames which is the good stuff. Shoot as HBR 1080 50i drop it in PPro 5.5 and it should reconize as 25p. Final cut 7pro may need extraction? Have fun its smooth.
