360 aerial panorama over Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport

Benjamin Kenobi

Easy? You call that easy?
I surprised they let you do it on an active airport. I see a few planes on the runway.

I tried 'Where's Waldo' but couldn't see where you took off from.

Great pics!

360 panorama @ 2,000' AGL over Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Click the pic to view the interactive panorama. Gyro support for mobile devices is activated so you may tilt and pan your device to 'look around'.

Be sure to look 'up'! ;)

Something isn't quite right here. If you scroll all the way up, you see the bottom of a Hexa. So what took the picture? Was that Hexa photoshopped in?

One of the techniques used is that a final shot is taken of the sky while on the ground to fill in what the camera can't see as it points vertically. At least with the GoPro 360's I've seen. So probably inserted the copter as well.

Truth is..... We did this from a full scale R44 and composited the PanoCopter ex post facto :)

'Normal' panorama here:

But our PanoCopter is capable of shooting these as well. Samples here:

Happy Flying!

HA! I knew it! Did you fly the R44? I've only flown the R22 in the Robinson line. Flown a lot of different MDs, though since I became a pilot back in 1987.

I was not piloting the R44. I'm only a rated fixed wing pilot. We charter the R44 for these shoots.

I also have spent a bit of time in MD helicopters. Their factory is on the same airport that I keep my airplane (Falcon Field FFZ). I fly for them shooting air to air of their copters. A recent one here in which we shot a new 520N from their factory MD900. Exceptionally fun!

10-15 years ago i was vp of one of the phoenix md factory custom paint shops..... had to retire early but they still do one from time to time. Grabbed the sticks on a few new notars, there the bomb. I even have a Vario scale md900,,,, from the affair, hahaha if you see the shreds on an md notar, pretty good chance i laid it out and painted it.

Notars are nice but you miss the challenge (and risk) of striking your tail rotor on threes when landing in a confined area... LOL.

I did most of my flying out of the Van Nuys, CA airport. Clay Lacey has his business there. He's responsible for a lot of TV and Movie helicopter work like Airwolf, Magnum PI, etc.

I actually paid part of the cost of my training airbrushing logos on helicopters for the school I attended. Clay Lacey's staff would also use a lot of "peel paint" for movie helicopters.

Nice work on the model!
