Could it be that you had a bad ESC from the outset? Perhaps the crash had happened because of the bad ESC. ....just another thought.

I went octo with that assumption - that it would give me that kind of redundancy. When you say no compensation, what do you mean? If one motor or prop goes it means you have 7 left to keep a camera from falling out of the sky. I agree with IrisAerial, the controller would have to compensate...
