Bags for the travelling circus that is Aerial Cinematography

Yeah, I had tracked down a few lipos in Colorado, which was surprisingly hard. So I brought them back with me. TSA in Denver were extremely professional about it. The primary guy flagged me, as well he should (I am actually happy they check this stuff), and they efficiently passed it up the...

Bags for the travelling circus that is Aerial Cinematography

Yeah, I had a trip get completely screwed because they took all my batteries. This was at Toronto Pearson. Security of course questioned them (as they should). But CATSA's regulations ultimately pass the buck on to the carrier (ie: "check with your carrier"). So they called some Air Canada...

Designing a multi-rotor for very high endurance

Sorry, yeah, a little out of it today. :dejection:

Designing a multi-rotor for very high endurance

What do the two copters you have look like? X8 and the X16? So you think you could do 70 minutes with a quad while carrying a payload? And where do you find the special high-density GensAce batteries?

Designing a multi-rotor for very high endurance

This is something I'm very interested in. I like to compare performance numbers between multicopters, helicopters and airplanes. I've seen a number of "endurance specials" where they have a quad hovering for over an hour, but the machines seem restricted to hovering in windless environments...

    New Sony A7.

LOL, isn't watching old servo-gimbal footage a trip? ;) Never seen that guy before. Actually not that impressed, he had a serious tail wag problem. There used to be a lot of Pro SRH AP guys on HeliFreak, but they're all gone now. I think there's one guy left.

    New Sony A7.

Know, not sure who you're referring to by Eric. There were a lot of guys. Even Photoship One is selling multirotors now. Helis definitely have advantages. But they're also definitely harder to get working perfectly. And if you don't need the particular advantages they offer, it's just not...

    New Sony A7.

Ok. But have we seen any results? Is he actually using it? Honestly asking, I just haven't seen anything. I know of a number of long-time professionals that have given up on single rotors. Just too finicky, and that much more dangerous.

    New Sony A7.

So, are Copter Kids the only guys left flying single rotor professionally? Nice new machine they've built. Looks to be based on the Goblin. I like those mechanics a lot.

Carbon Fiber Props Deteriorating ~ Failing

Well, I just ordered 16 APC MR props. Not going to chance it with these cheap CF props.

Carbon Fiber Props Deteriorating ~ Failing

No, you don't need collective pitch control, you just need a very simple pivoting hinge point. Yes, it's extra complexity on a MR, and I'm not really suggesting it's worthwhile to pursue. It was just a statement that this could be a cause of the failure of these CF props, and also that it's...

Carbon Fiber Props Deteriorating ~ Failing

I don't think that's why DJI did that, because the hinge on those props is not in the right direction. What you would need is more like a folding glider propeller. Or, a teeter-totter design which is what most RC helis use.

Carbon Fiber Props Deteriorating ~ Failing

I didn't really tell people not to balance props. I just said it's "almost pointless". I don't bother, but I didn't tell other people not to. The key thing here is that if your vibration management strategy is to ignore vibration damping, and balance your props to the nth degree so you don't...

Carbon Fiber Props Deteriorating ~ Failing

The data doesn't lie. Notice the extremely strong correlation between vibration amplitude and groundspeed. This machine had the APM rigidly attached to the motor frame. Another machine: Same effect shown. Vibration is not as bad as this frame uses a "clean frame/dirty frame" layout...

    Rctimer motors. Opinions?

I can't comment on the motors, but the problem may actually be with the ESC's. I am using iPower motors which are pretty good, with HobbyWing Quattro ESC's, which also have a pretty good reputation. One day, I plugged a battery in, and one motor just went up in a puff of smoke. Seems a FET...

Carbon Fiber Props Deteriorating ~ Failing

Fact is, balancing is almost pointless unless all you do is hover. Even the most perfectly balanced props ( I know a guy who adjusts them for tracking too!) will start to vibrate as soon as the aircraft starts moving through air. Due to very basic aerodynamics. I actually have data logs that...

MultiWii / NAZE / SP Racing F3 Warning about APM2.x performance on Octocopters

Just a quick update on this issue. Randy and Tridge have spent all week working on this issue and have made very substantial progress. I hope to test it later today. So far it appears that they've managed to improve the efficiency of the code running on APM2.x enough that it's going to run...

    GoodLuckBuy Freight Tip

I think he's saying that they are holding everything up regardless, for inspection, because the hobby shippers had been sneaking them into shipments undeclared.

    Trappy vs FAA

LOL, no. But that's why the FAA only allowed these flights to occur in the middle of bumf**** nowhere. I believe one of them was a servo failure... I had to think... $100,000 and you're using hobby king servos? LOL I remember a few years ago, one of the really big ones (Global Hawk)...

I agree. If I actually lived in the US, I would donate to Trappy's legal defence fund.
