Wkm compass setup

Just wondered what the correct way to set up the compass GPS module.
Should the compass point directly forward in relation to the Multirotor or should the compass point to magnetic north when the Multirotor points to true north?

Thanks

Point it straight ahead. If when flying straight out from you the craft moves to one side or another then rotate the GPS puck in the opposite direction until it flies straight. You are then done. The setting should be about your magnetic declination unless you have other interference going on.

Makes me wonder how people calibrate their compass on larger 6 and 8 motors multi's... With batteries + gimbal + camera... i look like an IDIOT trying to calibrate them...

Gimbal doesnt need power whilst calibrating your compass.

True, but if unpowered it flops around. You guys use zip ties or something?

On small gimbals it's not an issue, but bigger one's holding a red for example... My gimbal has a quick detach, but not sure if everyone has one.

can't you put the Gimbal on after calibrating the compass at the take off site? especially if it has a quick detach mount or perhaps you could use a couple of those velcro straps, the type made to bundle cables together to hold the gimbal whilst you calibrate.
I tend to calibrate the compass on my SkyJib with the Zenmuse powered down and then power it up afterwards, never had an issue thus far with the Zenmuse initializing properly.

Yes i currently have it taken off, or simply shut off. Good idea on the velcro strap, didn't think about that...

If I need to calibrate the compass I do it before attaching the gimbal. Makes it all a bit easier..
Thanks for the info. I was questioning the compass alignment as I have been using poi mode a bit recently and my camera operator was moaning that it wasn't maintaining the nose in very accurately..
