using a tablet or iPad for downlink video

Greetings,

Has anyone tried to configure a portable tablet, Android or iPad as the video downlink display? I know that there are apps for direct connect to several digital cameras that will display live view. Configuring a wireless connection sure would be nice.

Thank you in advance for any replies,
Bob

Hello Tahoe Ed,

For photography the GoPro wifi app on the Samsung Galaxy tablet is fine; my Nexus 4 phone works just as well. Using this app to make setting adjustments before a flight is wonderful, but for video the 4+ second delay is just too long. As a professional photographer the ability to use a tablet for instant feedback is a great feature. There just seems to be a way to hack the cable needed for tethering a camera to a tablet viewing and go wireless. Tablets and iPads have several nice advantages, built in battery, wonderful display viewing in direct daylight, lightweight, affordable (my 7" tablet cost $197.00) and can by used later once the video is post proceed for viewing... also nice as a GPS when traveling to a location.

Has anyone tried the new wifi feature now offered on the Sony Nex-5N camera?

Ah I was so impressed with the Gopro wifi link once I'd updated the firmware and established it, good for control...whats the range btw?
BUT was so disappointed in the 4 sec lag in live preview. Thats just a little to much for any practical use I think, I'll stick to VTx. 4 seconds is a long time when dealing with flying things

I am thinking of going down this road my self. As you say it makes a bunch of sense. I was thinking of sticking with my normal down link ( I have 2, 1x 1.3 and 1x 5.8) and converting the signal on the ground to 802 wirless that the ipad could read. Means I will still have great range and could have as many screens as required for my clients, just turn on your iphone! Has any one tried this approach???

I was not able to located an affordable solution. Seems simple enough... maybe something from this years NAB show will surface.

Mr take no prisoners!
I did some testing last weekend and determined that the maximum range I could get was about 60 metres, for basic stuff this actually pretty good.

With the latest updates I found that it re-established the connection quite quickly after losing it once back in range.

I tested with Black and Silver.
