Seasoned Pro looking for an awesome small rig ....ideas?

Hey guys, I have been building and working with quads since Hoverfly was one man and a hand made board....www.x3quadcopter.com

Now I am looking for a small rig, I want the smallest rig I can get with super smooth pan/tilt/roll I want tiny Gopro and small gh2 level cams not my Epic.

What do you guys think is a great camera mount and easy to deal with small quad frame?

thanks for help since I built my own I just don't know what to buy that is prebuilt that works well. :)

Aye Up Obin Osion. Welcome to MRF.

Guess I would be building a F450 with some landing extenders and waiting for the vast array of direct drive gimbals for the GoPro that are about to hit the market.

What have you been looking at?

I am not really sure..I need redundancy as in 6 rotor or more...I want to fly small cameras with full pan tilt and roll and stabilizer....I really just don't know...Any Droid Works or Cine star type ready to roll rigs?

OR good mount I can figure out the smaller frame...??

Hey Obin,

Your stuff was super inspiring to me back in those QuadPowered days! I can't recommend a pre-built but when I kick around the idea of what you want in my head these are the components I would probably go with:

Rusty's UAP1 or UAP2 frame with carbon arms and his landing legs in a Y6 format plus the double block clamps for quick arm removal. http://www.shop.aglhobbiesllc.com/
Autoquad FC (results from this thing are super impressive but I haven't flown one yet)
ESC32's or SimonK flashed ESC's (good one's in Rusty's shop)
I am still using 2814 motors with 12" or 13" props, I 'm not currently up to speed with all the new motors available

Hey how cool...yea I have gone kinda underground working and shooting...thanks for infos...just looking for a really small quad to get in tighter stuff..:)

You mentioned above that you wanted six or more motors for redundancy? You can also do a quad with Rusty's frames. You can actually do whatever frame style you want (just about) with his frames. Y6 is a nice compromise between all if not lifting a lot of weight, and you get some redundancy. It also gets the arms out of the way for those wide angles.

I really like Rusty's frames. They are durable (free replacement parts) and very customizable. The UAP1 plates are a little smaller in diameter and use 16mm cf or aluminum arms that you cut to whatever length you want. If your just carrying a gopro or nex 5n you can go with a much smaller setup, if you want to be able to carry the gh2 then your gonna have to go a little bigger. I am not sure how much you have been following the MR industry, but the brushless gimbals are just hitting the market. Gopro size mounts are coming on the market with amazing results. Way better than the servo driven gimbals, so be sure to look into that. I can't suggest a brand yet.

Well I kinda led the industry for a while then got my perfect EPIC rig flying and starting working all the time and now doing our own feature film and lost track for about 6 months. The brushless stuff looks very interesting indeed. AMAZING feedback speed on that stuff...really wonder how a 50mm lens looks though? my mountainbike handlebar mount looks "steady" on a gopro lens LOL!!!!f

I see a ton of prushless SOny NEX and gopro tests on youtube but no real products yet?? that frame looks about like what I want...but now need the gimbal...gotta have 3 axis as well...

gopro 2.7k with custom lenses is the goal. I want crazy small stable for stupid awesome indoor camera moves with actors and for VFX plate work. I have the big 27lb machine: www.x3quadcopter.com and need a tiny brother for it.

So see them gold motors the "worst" motors you could buy and the cheapest? still going strong with my Red Epic camera on board flying for film and TV....I guess I should get new ones some time...I just hate changing anything when it all works so well after so much screwing around to get it working well. lol

I think I have like 900 flights or something on the current version of my new beast.

650 mm motor-to-motor and 14" props seems BIG to fly indoors (actually seems huge). I know your a great pilot but good luck navigating that down a hallway if needed.

The DW mini 6 looks nice. Of course I still like the customizable UAP1/2 that you could make any format or size you want (just about) by just changing arm length. And you could buy two of those for the price of the mini 6.

Developer of AlexMos brushless controller is supposedly working towards 3-axis control. From what I have read it should be sooner rather than later. Once the controller is in place it will be just a matter of weeks before you see the 3-axis brushless gimbals.

Personally I've never seen a 3 axis specifically for GoPro, you could either take a decent 2 axis and convert it or just get one of the smaller 3 axis and adapt it so the GoPro mounts easily. I believe the thinking behind it is that anyone using primarily a GoPro for aerial video either doesn't need 3 axis or can't afford 3 axis, if they have the need they're likely to be using something larger/better than GoPros.
