Seeing Santa brought me a GH3 for chrimbo I thought I would start a users thread.

Any one using this camera who could give some tips and tricks to get the best out of it please chip in.

As I learn and find useful tutorials I will post them in here.

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
Was looking at that yesterday, that little 14mm prime lens would be good for A/P, no?

So far I've been flying the gh3 with the 14-45mm seems like a good lens, I've had it set at 18mm. The IS has been good.

If possible when you get a chance can you try it with the Image stabilisation turned off when flying to see what difference it makes.
There is not a great deal of IS lenses around for this camera and I would like to know how it performs without it as all the other wide angles don't have IS
Thats why I was surprised DJI went with the Olympus 12mm for the zenmuse.
Would love to see a comparison with IS turned on/off when flying.

I got the 14/140 for now until I se what work I can get with it. I was looking at the Zen but just can't justify it especially since you are stuck with the Olympus lens and reading the zen manual you can't even put a lens filter on it! Anyone flying these with on the Zen with any other lens?

How are people triggering the camera when not on a Zen?

With this? http://www.rcshutter.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=97

What about video out?

The camremote is really good, I bought it with the recommendation of a forum member for playing around with, and it gives me full control over the camera.
Another really nice lens for the GH3 is the 12-35 F2.8

Thanks Quinton. I nearly got the 12/35 but thought the 14/140 would do as a hand held lens and when I decide what I am going to fly the camera on then choose a lens suitable for gimbal operation.

How are you getting your HDMI to Sd for video down link?

At the moment Im not flying a camera YET
I am waiting delivery of the 5D Zenmuse which should be here very soon, so I don't have those problems, but am also interested in what others are doing, as I have also ordered the ArmBGC for a gimbal which I am waiting on.
Forgot to add when looking at lenses, don't rush into buying them, I believe lenses are more important than the camera, as you will have them for years.
When looking at lenses for video have a think about the aperture when zooming, and buy ones that dont change when you zoom like the 12-35 stays F2.8 through the zoom, unlike the 14-140 which goes from F4-5.8

Not so new and improving
I have used the Lumix lenses on a Panasonic 101 video camera and found the 14mm soft, the 20mm sharp , the 14-140 sharp but slow.

The 14-42mm panny lens works with IS, It's very light and image quality is average. Its' also small so filters are inexpensive and somewhat disposable. The IS has to be triggered from the camera, there is no hardware switch on lens so IS won't work on the BlackMagic Pocket camera, but does on the Panny cams.

I haven't tried the 14-140 yet. Will soon as have a new MR which will carry more weight. Probably be 1-3 weeks on that depending on free time and weather....

The RC shutter looks interesting, but the data rate on GH3 is so low, sd cards can hold lots of hours of video, so I just start the recording at take off and for the couple times I've experimented with stills, I just set it to start clicking away at take off and keep a handful of shots and toss the rest.

If I can ever figure out how to use my extra channels on my Futaba 8fg, I might try something like the RC Shutter. It looks like you set gh3 to take either video or stills at take off then the switches will trigger only a still(s) or video, depending on mode. Is that correct? It would be nice to grab a still in the middle of taking video, which you can do on the GH3 when hand holding it.

I’ve been flying the GH3 with the 12-35 lens for several months. I’m quite happy with this setup. I use it for both stills and video. If you’re going to do video with it, you have to get a ND filter or two. I use a 3X and 6X depending on the light. The quality of the video is fantastic. I have been flying a Cinestar 8 with 2-axis gimbal. I am migrating to an Alexmos-powered 2-axis, which I’ve been testing for the last week. It’s pretty awesome. First videos are up on my Vimeo page at http://vimeo.com/stevemaller, including this one, which shows the brushless gimbal in action: https://vimeo.com/82838616

Steve, is your octo an x8?

On your converted 2-axis cinestar gimbal, is your roll motor direct or belt driver?
