F550 with H3-2D

After a lot of looking and shopping I finally pulled the trigger and made my first multi-rotor purchase.

I found a guy getting out of his current platform and looking to move up. He sold me his F550 with the ArielMediaPros heavy lift kit conversion. Along with his DJI H3-2D gimbal. In his current configuration he has a Max Amps 4S 9000mah XL for the main LiPo and an additional 3S 2000mah for the gimbal.

I am new at this but it seems like that is a lots of added weight would it be beneficial to consolidate into one battery? Or does the gimbal require it's own separate power source?

One battery = 1 point of failure and if you have a power drain of some sort you could mess up your flight time. OTOH you only have one voltage to monitor.
Many batteries = If the camera or gimbal goes you are still flying

A gimbal will only use about 100Mah every 10-15 mins so I would change something. Get a little 400 or wire it together.

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
what flight controller does this have? the gimbal should be getting power from the PMU of the flight control system.

I only use one lipo to power everything. I have a video downlink with mine and iOSD so I can monitor voltage. Yes I probably get slightly lower flight times but I only have one lipo to monitor.

I have a F550 with that H3-2D, i run with two batteries in parallel and use a single LIPO alarm. I have a video link and OSD on order for voltage feedback. I currently only fly line of sight and use a timer on my controller as well as the alarm to monitor my voltage. I always use two of the same size and age batteries and balance charge them before flying. They always discharge at very similar rates. I also allow enough time so I am not draining them to their absolute limit. To this date I have not had any issues. The more you fly your rig the more you will know what its characteristics are. For the first dozen or so flights it could be a good idea to keep it close and reasonably low.
