Exporting Multirotors - export licence - ECCN

Anyone know anything about exporting multirotors from the UK?

Sent out one to the US the other day via Fedex and they started asking me for a ECCN number (Export Control Classification Number). Of course I didnt have one and they ended up forfilling the delivery.

However I thought I would then do some digging and turns out that to export some items be it via a company or a person simply selling something on second hand, you may need a export licence (depending on the item).

Some items are 'controlled goods', eg military, defence or security related goods. This also covers 'Dual Use' goods that can be used for both civil and military purposes. Soooo

I check down the 'UK Military List' list and find 'Aircraft, unmanned airborne vehicles, aeroengines'.

So as far as I can figure, that means that exporting a UAV (even if its a toy) requires a export licence.

Has anyone come up against this before? Any retailers on here who know about this?

It comes with hefty fines and ever jail time if you don't do it right so I am keen to find out more and what is online is a bit beyond me!.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah I here you.

Unfortunately though marking it as a toy (which I did) seems to be irrelevant. If its a UAV its a UAV.....

I don't think its one of those things one can try to 'get around' at least.... I am going to check first, if I need a licence then ill have to just apply for one.

I cant believe that all the retail companies selling multi rotors like the F460, S800 etc etc have export licences.... who knows. Hopefully some of them will see this and let me know! :)

A quick look at this document suggests that a UAV only becomes "controlled" (in respect of exporting from UK) if it has an autonomous range of more than 300km or has been designed or modified specifically for military use. Somebody in Fedex is being a d**khead - it's a toy, specifically a "scale model"! I export parts for UAVs under Trade Tariff number 950300, about half of my business is into USA - nobody's challenged it yet!
