IrisAerial - Yes. A sad thing indeed. http://www.multirotorforums.com/showthread.php?13523-19-year-old-killed-by-his-RC-Helicopter-in-NY

PeteDee - And what do you suggest for the gun deaths? The US city with the highest number of gun related deaths is also the city with the strictest gun laws.
But as you move west, where there is a higher gun to people ratio, the rates drop dramatically.
In 2012 there were also more than 25,000 deaths caused by vehicles in the US. And in the first 3 months of 2013 it is estimated around 7200 deaths. What do we do about that?
Yes, Newtown was tragic. An inconceivable act by a coward who targeted small children and people who couldn't fight back.
I agree there is no place for the average Joe to have assault weapons or armour piercing rounds. But the majority of gun fatalities is from illegally obtained small guns by criminals from criminals.

When I was flying AP with a Trex600 (for 5 years) I was trying to drum up business when a building engineer said "there is no way that the heli will be over his construction site". I thought he was being a bit dramatic.... then I only flew multis for a year. The day I decided to take my Trex700E for a quick hop before selling it, I felt myself walking backwards away from it as it spooled up! I was spooked by it. I suddenly had a healthy respect for the larger heli!

I have videoed and photographed the best 3D heli pilots from around the world as they visited NZ for a demo and workshops. I wouldn't stand next to them as they flew within 2 yards of themselves in high-speed inverted head-high circles. If that makes me soft... I can accept that. I hope some look at this accident and ask themselves how close do they need to be when demonstrating just absolutely brilliant they are...

Condolences to the family after an avoidable incident...

Between twenty and twenty-five times as many people are struck by lightning PER YEAR in the U.S. than have been killed by RC helicopters in the history of forever.

Just a bit of perspective...

This is no where near the first time this has happened. It's not even the first time it's happened this year. It's got media legs because the guy cut his head off. Amazing what they do and don't cover, and the false perspective it gives everyone.

Then you shouldn't probably drive, fly on a plane or eat. The odds are much higher that anyone of those things will kill you faster. Love the knee jerk reactions. It is very sad and avoidable but hardly a common occurrence compared to deaths related to choking and automobile accidents.

As said above, just getting a bit of perspective here.

Cheers
