Question about ESC's for my F450 Build

An update: I just bought a set of these. I'll have them by Friday. They're already flashed with SimonK. I would presume the best version. We'll see. On the face of it they seem a good upgrade over the stock Dji 30 amp ESC's.

Question about ESC's for my F450 Build

Thanks, gtranquilla. I'm becoming desperate. I can't wait 3 or 5 weeks for my ESC's. I'll have to buy something suitable from another dealer who has them in stock. And now. Damn the $$. The ones backordered will just be kept in reserve for some future build.

Question about ESC's for my F450 Build

Hi gtranquilla. Thank you for your recommendations I studied the specs for those ESC's and they seem to be the right choice for my build. I need them now so I ordered 4 plus a spare right away. The same time I ordered the Hobbyking tool for reflashing the Atmel board. Also a matching...

Question about ESC's for my F450 Build

Okay this time I'm pulling my hair out over what ESC's to buy. I very nearly bought the expensive ones from AMP and was saved after doing some more reading. I want 40 amp OPTOs. The Maytechs from AMP each seem to have their own BEC. SBEC? And it turns out that Hobbyking sells ESC's that are...

    Calibrating ESC's to TX

Thank you, Bowley. Your reply gave me a heads up alert that I needed. I didn't want to program the ESC's but the specs said they would cut power if throttle signal were lost for more than a second. That disturbed me. I wouldn't want the power to be cut for any reason at all. Seems that if...

    Calibrating ESC's to TX

The ESC's need to be calibrated to mesh with my DX8 throttle. Moving the stick up and down 'til the ESC beeps and signals OK. One ESC at a time? Or all together at once. Should I power up all the motors and expect all four ESC's to calibrate simultaneously? That seems logical but I want to...

450/550 Flyers - Share your Landing Gear and Landing Gear/Gimbal setups

I'm building a 450 and today I decided upon a beginning AP path. I'm going to start learning with a GoPro and no landing gear or gimbel. The GoPro will dangle from the bottom of the craft so the props don't appear in the view. With a wire cable jello eliminator. I'll land it in a bucket. I...

more talk of "drones" in the news

Wait. The regulation you describe doesn't mention aerial photography at all. So in Texas it will become illegal to stand in front of any house and take a picture of it with a cellphone? Then Google maps will be illegal in Texas. I wouldn't worry. You're flying from a public sidewalk. Or...

Dear DJI, you've got a problem

For what it's worth, I learned from my early on reading that I ought not trust the Dji props. Motors too. I ordered the frame parts separately, knowing I would choose my own motors, ESC's and props. I didn't even want the $48 frame because I wanted black and white arms. Not red and white...

    Can this really be true?

If you have a $50,000 dollar red epic camera then why are you asking questions at all. Lots of people making videos are able to make cinematic videos better than your trys and spending a fraction of the money. How long ago did you acquire your red?

    Hello from the Left Coast

Thanks for all that helloman. It will take a while to digest all that you wrote. One of the hangups for me has been the use of the acronym PCB. In the silicon valley that has always meant "printed circuit board". The power distribution plate from Dji isn't exactly a printed circuit board per...

    Hello from the Left Coast

Thx, Helloman, I'm a little confused here. I intended soldering the battery wires to the correct spots on the power distribution plate. And then I thought that the BEC ought to be soldered to those same spots. So do the ESC's get their power from the BEC or from the power distribution board...

Pilot reports mystery black ‘drone’ at JFK

Thanks for posting your checklist, helloman. I saved it. There's a youtube video of some professional seller of the s800 going thru his checklist. Many must have seen it. His checklist goes further. I would have added this to your checklist: Wait for the BEC to signal that all the GPS...

    Hello from the Left Coast

Helloman, that was a really nice and interesting reply. Thx. So a 12 gauge battery wire can allow too much power going to the BEC? Because of its lower resistance? The Bec is supposed to eliminate too much power going to the FC and the ESC's. You see I'm scratching my head already. Oh Hi...

Pilot reports mystery black ‘drone’ at JFK

Weeks later and there have been no updates in the press. I assume no one at the FAA ever found the person flying the quad. The flyer got away with doing what he did. What if Costco begins selling the Phantom? Offering them for sale to anybody. There will be a lot of eyes put out and faces...

    Hello from the Left Coast

Hi stauntonflyer. I'm glad to make your online acquaintance. It's lucky for me that one of the largest online retailers of helicopters and components is located only two miles from where I work. I stopped by there after work on Friday and obtained all the correct size screws I need to...

Question about ESC's for my F450 Build

gtranqilla, thanks for that advice but I'm committed to the path I chose. I realize there are hundreds out there just enjoying flying their craft worry free. But I'm not. I don't have a craft to fly as yet. Parts are trickling in and I can't even begin building yet so in the meantime I'm...

Question about ESC's for my F450 Build

From further reading today I decided to reject connectors and just solder the ESC's directly to the motors. Today I saw too many videos and discussions of crashes due to connector issues. Of course I'll make sure the motors are rotating the correct directions before soldering the wires and...
