Hi, I had a similar problem when I first started and used the screws from the DJI550 to mont the motors on a carbon plate of a tarot 680. The screws were too long and shorted out the motor windings, however one this started I could never get them to work again they just twitted back and forth.

I have used the same sunny sky motors on a F550 and in one case i mixed the stock DJI motors with one SunnySky, no problems with or without the long leads. Were you using different size/ type of props with the sunnysky motors as they have a different diameter of centre pin?

I am not sure of the difference of airplane and hell mode but into the manual it shows that it should be set to airplane mode. I have read that some people do use Heli mode but you need to make sure that your mixes are set correctly.

Yes you should be in airplane mode

I would start looking at the assistant controller (software) to see if your sticks are showing in the software what you are expecting them to do. That way you can rule out the programming of the TX.
