WooKong-M Octo Flipping on Take Off

I have just finished my Octo build, calibrated orientation, used Att mode to try and take off but it immediately flipped from front to back as I tried to take off and dug into the earth. No real harm done but my stomach kind does a flip and then there is this sense of frustration and dissapointment that floods over because I had checked everything twice and all looked good.
I had individually setup each ESC and checked the rotation of the motor then as well.
I went through the setup client step by step.
I am using the Futaba S Bus connection and have an adapter for my Spektrum Dx6i, it took some trial and error to get the connections correct but all the TX sticks work as expected in the setup client.
The yellow lights were flashing indicating Att mode was good (I assume) and I just checked the rotation of the motors and the props again (at least for the third time).
I went with the default gains, I didn't change anything there.
I am using two separate batteries on each set of four ESC/motors (one powering the leds and the other the FC).
All the motors spool up as expected.

It flipped from the front to the back (front motors came over the top).

Any suggestions of things I can check? I am not sure what to try.

You wouldn't believe how often this happens, but it does.
Go back over how your esc's are connected to the motor controller. It sounds like you have a coulpe motors plugged into the wrong ports.
Check that over very carefully, again, then report back.

It will be most likely , motors connected to wrong port .. I have done this myself on a few occasions and it is a very common mistake even when double checking .. So now I triple check :)
Failing that it could be a channel mixed round like Ail or Elev swapped or a channel needs reversing ..
Or Imu is not facing forward .
99% sure it will be one of the above..

Was it an immediate quick flip? or a slower one? If it's slower, then it could be due to slow takeoff. You have to gun it!

I recommend hand holding for your maiden 'launch'. Get a friend to hold or man the controls, test them out.

I disagree. If it is wired wrong or if something else is wrong the craft will flip/roll back and hit the person holding it. It is never a good idea to fly an unproven system anywhere near human flesh. Hell it's not a good idea ever, stuff happens and when it does you don't want to be close.

I have done this before ... It is one of two things.
1st, check to make sure all your ESC's are in thier proper location.
2nd, Make sure all your control channels are in the correct direction (You may have a channel reversed!) I have done this a few times! :)

Stay at it .. Also having a helper to go over it is a good idea .. two eyes are better than one!

Mcrites- I agree that it could be dangerous, especially if you're doing it alone with one hand on the sticks and the other on the bird, but with two solid hands on it, and a slow rev up from idle, any problem will show itself before you get close to hovering rpm.

**Just be careful**

If all above doesnt help, then check each esc at 100% throttle. I had 3 bad esc's on my octo - belive it or not :)

Okay I checked everything... all the motor connections were correct according to my numbering of the ESCs - ...and then I realized I had the entire ship turned around I had put on some foam coloured landing pads and because those were put on wrong (the front was now the back and the back was now the front) I made the wrong connections, I went back and renumbered all my ESCs and reconnected everything. I will try it again - hopefully that was the problem and it is solved, but I still need to get it off the ground to verify that was indeed the issue. I will report back here and let you know how that turned out.

Yes! Got off the ground yesterday. Thanks for the suggestions here, that really helped me go back and be diligent about checking those ESC Connections to the FC. It seemed quite stable but it did flip on landing I am thinking that was probably because it landed on in the snow (a bit slippery) and perhaps it was that it handled quite different from my Hoverfly Pro ship. I will probably put some expo into the sticks so it is more like the other ship.

My first hover attempt resulted in a roll over. I was trying to take off too slow. Once DJI gets in the air it will stabilize. You have to spin the motors up and then "gun it" to get it airborne. Definitely check your wiring, prop rotation and IMU position.

I took it up a couple of weeks of ago and it hovered for about 10 seconds then went out of control; pitching back and forth before coming down hard and breaking an arm, etc. Waiting for parts. Since I just checked everything again my latest thought is a bad RX. Will replace that, check every thing yet again and gingerly try it again.

I am starting to think my cheapo wood frame is the only way to go.
