Not something that you can sit in but how about a BIG RC quad w/variable pitch props?

Theres still a few issues to overcome. First theres no redundancy in the event of failure. No autorotation or unpowered glide with these aircraft. Second, theres significant engineering/technical issues to overcome to make these types of aircraft stable, reliable and viable as personal transport. Personally, I think the future lies in unmanned vehicles. But its going to be interesting to see where the development goes.
