Which is most stable video platform for a Hexa - Y or 6 point ?

The two halves of Zaxis have been pondering whether a Hexa Y configuration is a better platform for video than the normal flat 6 point configuration.
We end up with the pros and cons about even. Y better for field of view, flat arrangement has more thrust more evenly spread radially so keeping level simpler, Y is more compact, Y must place higher demands on FC , etc.
It does seem that all the really good video posted is done with the normal arrangement either Hexa or Octo.
Overall I was tending towards the Y and Lec was the opposite.
Can anyone settle the matter for us ?

I think part of it depends on what flight controller you're going to choose. I've had personal experience with Hoverfly and Y6 seems to be extremely stable (although flat hexa is about the same) but WKM seems to be more stable on a flat hexa vs a Y6. The Y6 has to overcome the turbulence it creates for it self with the coaxial motor setup and some FC's can handle this better than others I think.

MK is one of the FC's I have yet to play with so I don't know much. I mostly see people using flat hexa or octo frames on MK (when browsing here and RCG).

Yes, most MKs will be flat arrangement as that's all they sell but there are a lot of Y configuration Droidworx, and other, systems out there running on the same FC.
I'm hoping there are some users out there with cogent arguments as to which is best or whether it is really just swings and roundabout.

I've flown both configs using Hoverfly, MK, and DJI, from what I've seen there isn't a whole lot of difference in stability either way. The only real arguments for one vs the other are the Y6 has true redundancy where the flat hex really does not, and the Y6 has a nice large opening with no obstructions for a camera to look through, a flat hex can easily drop the front boom into the camera view if its windy or you do some very fast FF or abrupt transitions to it from hover.

I saw no difference in stability in wind from one platform to the other, from the video camera perspective it looked pretty much exactly the same. If your biggest concern is keeping expensive camera gear from unintentionally reaching ground level, you may want to go with the Y6, otherwise you really won't notice the difference of flat hex vs Y6.

Ken I am still anxiously awaiting your test results for the DJI WKM running on 5 motors on the Y6. Didnt you say you were gonna try this out? I dont know if you can take a prop off and see if it takes off or somehow disable a motor remotely to test this.

For me the flat hexa format seemed more rigid and stable. Y6 seemed a little more loose or "floaty" to me. This is with Hoverfly and MK boards. In the end I think I preferred the Y6 because of redundancy comforts and the "floaty" feel.

Thanks for the input so far everyone. It still seems a finely balance argument.
@Mactadole --- floaty vs rigid feel ---- could I interpret this by comparing with automobiles. Floaty is your typical big american car you drive with one hand on the wheel and rigid is a more european sports car driven with two hands feeling and reacting to every bump on the road ?

"unintentionally reaching ground level"....LOL!!

Yep, although I wouldn't say the flat hexa reacts to "every bump on the road". It still has great suspension :)
