What's a multi rotor helicopter anyway?!?

Bartman

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
I've been asked, "what's a multi rotor copter anyway??" and I say "well, it's hard to describe, it's sorta like a helicopter but it isn't a helicopter" and then I wave my hands around as I try to explain the motors and props and the flimsy central body. So, to answer anyone that has come here without prior multi rotor exposure, here you go

Here's a KK Quadcopter (four motors) video

Here's an MK Hexacopter (six motors, getting it yet?) video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyYujjP5J-k

Here's video taken from an MK Oktokopter (eight motors)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n5kY6oU9A4

I hope that helped. FWIW, I haven't yet unlocked the secret as to why sometimes there's a k in kopter and sometimes it's spelled copter. Maybe some mysteries are better left unsolved?

Quad people usually understand but Y6? It takes all sorts of explaining... I stick to "It's a helicopter type thing with lots of propellers and a camera hanging off the bottom...."

Hi
Its just a play of words...you can say either multicopter or multirotor....but the only purpose for making it to send your camera at a certain height for taking aerial photography...but the function same like helicopter..

Although it can be fun for us to describe these things, nomenclature is important. MR's have been lumped into the same classification as Drones and UAV's, so when I've tried to explain what a MR is to friends they'll reply negatively "its a Drone?"

This is a little long but it is interesting, you might even recognize some of the participants of the MR forums:
