If anyone locally wants a Hoverfly pro board, I have one for sale! Bought it for a hexa that I have since sold...

Hi Pete,

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Yep, that was me in the 139, medivac off an oil rig. Drop me a line if your down again, always a brew for ya here.

Rick.

Hi Guys, nice to see some other NZ guys on here. Im about to take the plunge and build a Cinestar for filming, but its hard to tell from all of this how well does the dji unit work? Is it worth buying over mk or hoverfly?

I think it comes down to how many $K you are willing to spend and how good you are at making things work. None of these work straight out of the box - unless you buy a turn-key unit from Tabb in the US. Even then you really need to spend time with him learning how to tune them properly.
I have seen several people in the last year who have bought premade (turnkey) systems with the sales dream telling them they will be videoing golf courses almost straight away. "the gps does all the work"... None of these people had any previous rc experience. One (after 6 months) still didn't know what a milliamp was).

I look at the hours and $$$ I have spent over the last 6 years and how much I haven't earnt! Just as well I love my hobby. I also enjoy diy scratch building...

For me... I shoot stills (and have done for 6 years by heli) and recently a little light-weight video. I have a good full-time job and I can't justify $40k for a beast. I don't have the time to chase stills work the way I would like to now! Joining the half-a-dozen Kiwis chasing work in NZ with $40K doesn't work for me (or my wife... funny that!).

From what Ive researched so far it looks like it will cost somewhere around the 10k nz mark to build something, possibly more or less. The most important thing for me is learning, I want to understand how everything works and why so i can eventually build the best multi possible for my needs. I would rather build it my self than get a rtf system. Ive been trying to read up as much as possible to understand all the pros and cons. Any advice is appreciated.

Was in Hamilton, but I've just moved to Wellington.
Should I just keep reading the forums to try and get a grip on it all?
