Small scale maps for the UK anyone?

Does anyone know a reasonably-priced way of getting detailed local maps of the UK? (Firstly, forget the leisure and Landranger maps, they're far too large scale). I'd like 1:10,000, or 1:5,000.

In the past, the Ordnance Survey used to publish paper 1:10,000 scale maps of the whole of the UK, and even smaller. But these seem to have vanished, and everythings gone digital and online. And there are lots of re-sellers who will print a custom map for you. But the prices are enormous !!!!! You're looking at £40 for a 2km by 2km area.

I've even tried ebay for an old paper map (even if it was from the 70s, it would do,But, no luck. The area I'm interested in, if it matters, is Essex.

What kind of detail do you need? Political? Physical? Would OpenStreetMap zoomed to the right level do? If money is tight and you don't need a massive area it would be easy enough to join a collection of screenshots to cover the area you want.

That's a great answer swisser, once I worked how to turn on the Lat/Long gridlines (select 'standard' Mapnik and enable Map Grid). That might be enough, certainly a big help. I don't know how accurate the Lat/Long lines are though, I'd have to calibrate that on site. It's not as 'safe' as an OS map, where you can guarantee the accuracy of the grid.
