Its probably been done using Apple QTVR. All you needed was a tripod with a pan head and make a series of pictures over 360 degrees. Its the same process, in reverse, for all those 360 deg product views you see on web sites. Unfortunately it looks like Apple have dropped support for it recently .... too niche !

That's quite an old image.... Jook Leong has been making them for years, he is very good at it... I think it was done with a Kaidan head and then stitched with Helmut Dersch's original panotools, which was a pig to use back then. It is still an excellent stitcher and is the basis for thee now popular PTGui.

There is some interesting history about the licensing of Dersch's work, the link above gives some background and links to some other impressive imaging...

If the lens is a good one, and it is mounted in an indexing head with the nodal point correctly calculated, then a spherical panorama in a phone box is quite achievable...
