S800 Evo (Having 2nd thoughts)

The longer I wait on the s800 Evo becoming available here in the UK the more I am having 2nd thoughts.

Especially after just watching the following review..

Anyone that already has the EVO would you agree with his thoughts (terrible audio I know but a lot of what he says is very true regarding limited part stock etc)

Should I hold off till next year, and see what else becomes available?
Anything new on the horizon that I should be considering instead?

Seriously considering Droidworx, but I am very interested to see what they have coming out, so don't want to rush it.
End of the day the frame is probably the cheapest part.

Don't like the landing gear at all though.

Holy crap. I have a S800 EVO pre ordered that I may cancel based off of this review. I just hope my dealer will refund my money. Now the big question, what to buy for 3000.00?

Where is the droidworx sale at? I just looked at Aerial Technology international's website and all of their droidworx frames are the regular price. What do you guys think about the Vulcan Mantis?

The EVO sounds like a typical Chinese fix for the problems with the original S800. No root cause analysis and then working around the problem rather than fixing it a source generating a whole new set problems that are as yet unknown. I would not have bothered to rename this the EVO, just S800 V 1.1

In hindsight putting a £2-4k camera and a £2.5k gimbal on the S800 Evo may not be the wisest thing to do.
I have been over at the Droidworx site, and seen the following..

Droidworx XM-X4 Titanium..
http://droidworx.co.nz/products/shop/xm-airframe-kits/airframe-xm-x4/

Core XM-X4 249.81 GBP
Booms 355mm & Engine Mounting XM-X4 Titanium 306.47 GBP
XM-X4 Coax Landing Gear and Gear Rail Assembly Retractable Extended Titanium 798.36 GBP
Crash cage 5-spoke + Dome XM – Carbon Finish 218.91 GBP

Total: 1,573.55 GBP

I know that the motors esc's etc together will be quite expensive, but I would be willing to pay for good gear, after all this thing will be flying with a lot of expensive gear.
Only problem, I am not that great with electronics and working out what motors go with the right ESC etc, I am more than willing to learn, but am I biting off more than I can chew.
I would love to build it myself rather than buy a RTF, as that is the only real way you can learn.

Anyone purchased directly from Droidworx before from the UK, if so how long did delivery take, and was there much import duty to pay, or would I be better getting a UK reseller to get the gear for me.
I am VAT registered, and looking for something to do the BNUC-S flight exam with, I have already passed the ground course.

I have 3 mates with S800's and they havent had any issues and apart from a hiccup with 5.22 I havent had any significant problems with any of my DJI products - that said they are not without fault, just like any product in this world nothing is ever going to be perfect so dont expect it. Im currently building my Evo and im fairly happy with things so far - my arms seem a lot stiffer than QAV Advertising video and Im pretty sure those boys dont go to the gym but my 13 yr old daughter was able to lock the arms into place!!! :tennis:

Pretty easy to rubbish anything in this world really, buy educated, weigh up all sides of the evidence out there, and put in the time building to get things right, dont slap it together throw it in the air and hope things dont go pear shaped.

This build is probably going to take me a couple of weeks to make sure its as good as can be. I know this craft is without risk, then again neither is driving to the park to fly.

Buying directly from Droidworx took about 5 days to ship from New Zealand to Austria....can't remember the import tax, but was not bad.

If you live in the UK and are VAT registered, it would be good to buy from either within the UK (and deduct the VAT later with your tax declaration), or buy from within the EU and get the VAT deducted directly at the date of purchase....

At the moment it only makes sense to buy directly from Droidworx if you buy something from their Spring Sale or if the dealers don't have exactly the frame you want....

Hi Wil. Have you got any video from your evo? if so i bet it looks amazing. sorry your not happy with your s800. I have built over 80 s800's and 16 evo's so im very familiar with both (I build everything that is purchased from Aerialmediapros.com) No your right there isnt a huge difference in old s800 and evo but there are some improvements on the evo. yes the arms flex when you pick it up by 2 arms like you did and bounce did but there alot stiffer then the old type( i have both right here come on over and ill show ya) and not sure why you can fit all the electronics in the frame iv built about 100 with no problems. these things produce some amazing video for the cost. The IMU should be mounted on the supplied mounting bracket on lower frame so it is isolated from any vibration from motors and props. Thats why the dampners are on there now. the locking tab issue..maybe you didnt have the arm up all the way and forced it and broke, Ive build about 100 of these things, x 6 arms = 600 tabs and never broke one..you got some strong fingers i guess. :) PARTS? you need parts? We have almost everYthing thing in stock and if we dont will have what ever were missing in about a week. we have tons of happy customers and one who has been using the s800 for 5 months on set (in jungle, alaska) for 10 hrs a day flying over and over day after day in the most extreme conditions and no problems.. that poor s800 is beat but still going..you can see there work on discovery channel and tv show Gold Rush.. I wish I could post the video but I can't. I build then then load up and go test everyone of these we sale and I have not had one I wasent happy with. I dont have a close up to show you that all the electronics fit but you can see in the pics its all in the frames..Some s800's and evo off to test fly
Just my 2 cents.. happy filming :)

As an owner and long time user of both DJI and Droidworx frames there is no comparison. The one is a bad soldered plastic vibrating toy and the other is a well thought out carbon fiber tank. The choice is not so hard. DJI dealers sound like used car salesmen lately...

Its the MTOM that worries me, with a zenmuse, camera and a few other things on there it has to be very close if not over the maximum take off mass.
Has anyone even done any of their own tests on the EVO, is this a figure DJI just pulled out of the air, as it was just upped 1kg from the original s800.
Might be OK flying around in Alaska, or the jungle where you wont worry about anything happening, but I need to be able to trust it 100% especially if it will be flying near buildings or people.

Takeoff Weight:6.0kg~8.0kg
Power Battery:LiPo
(6S、10000mAh~15000mAh、(Min)15C)
Max Power Consumption:3000W
Hover Power Consumption:800W
Hover Time: Max:20min
(@15000mAh & Takeoff Weight 6.7Kg)

Hey Quinton maybe as Chris suggested a Droidworx frame is for you if you are going to fly heavy? There are definitely better frames out there but regardless of how good a frame is they still crash - just like everything else built in this world they all have the potential to come unstuck. http://www.suasnews.com/2012/10/19348/multirotor-hits-skyscraper-and-burns-downtown-auckland-nz/

That said any flying near buildings and people might require a rethink - there are other options such as cable cam etc - might take more to setup but it would mitigate the majority of risk and that is what this is really about - cause no matter how well setup and safe you may think your setup is - when it goes pear shape (for what ever reason) and negatively impacts someones life - its a result none of us want, let alone the person that has to live with the consequences.

That man was simply a fool, you could point out 101 things that he was doing wrong, they actually showed us that video while doing the BNUC-S ground course.
It is perfectly reasonable (and legal) to fly near building and people, as long as you have permission (in the UK at least), and they are under your control.
Everything has it's risks, but I am just trying to minimise those risks as much as possible.

I just took Chris's advice and checked out Droidworx sale and got a Skyjib 6 complete airframe kit for $1100.00, and I bought the Skyjib ti retracts as well. I am going to cancel my s800 EVO pre order even though I am going to lose the free included Wookong M.
