Phantom questions before I buy...

I cant take it anymore!!!!!!!! I sold my AR Drone 2.0 yesterday to fund the Phantom. I havent read to many first hand experiences but ive been doing alot of research on them.. SO before I click the buy it now I just want to make sure that everyone is enjoying them. Anything bad to report about them so far? Any upgrades that are a MUST? I want to know your opinions please.

I am also going to buy a Go Pro but not sure which one to get. The silver edition for $300 or the black for $400? Is the black really worth the extra $100? Thanks for the help all.

yep the black is worth the 100$ - sorry not much knowledge on the phantom. the black is a whole other beast. you will be happy. higher frame rate and resolutions make it worth the money.

Hi,

I have been flying the phantom for a few weeks, and mine performs incredibly well. So far I have modded nothing and kept it original. It flies with a degree of accuracy that I have never experienced before. Great fun straight out of the box! Go for it!

As for the GoPro be warned about the Black edition. I am on my third one now, I had to return the two previous cameras due to the well-known freezing issue. The first camera was completely unusable, it froze every time I used it. The second one was slightly better and froze about 70% of the time after switching it on.

Each revision of the GoPro black has its own way to freeze... If you have time, read some of the posts here: http://www.goprofanatics.com/gopro-hd-hero3/1513-gopro-hero3-freezing-problem.html

I have updated the firmware countless times, formatted the SD card on my PC instead of in the camera, I am using one of the fastest microSD card out there, etc, etc... and so far my third camera works ok but I haven't tested it enough to say for sure.

If you are lucky and get a working GoPro black, it's a fantastic camera. If not, you'll wish you'd bought a Silver...

The camera mount that comes with the phantom is built for the GoPro Hero 2. A Silver or Black GoPro Hero3 fits in there no problem, but you need to add a small piece of foam or something similar at the back to make up for the thinner GoPro3. Alternatively, the GoPro "frame" (or "The Frame" as it is called) can be used and fits perfectly to the Phantom.

Make sure to balance the props to prevent "jello" on your movies.

I regret selling my GP2 for the GP3 Black, it still has the same old gopro failings, poor light and colour handling, whites flare out, susceptable to rolling shutter, and is ever so temperamental, just freezing up at some random moment.
If I lost my 3 I would buy a 2 again. standard SD card and standard 3.5mm AV port, high frame rate on 3B is good for slowing up. Gopro 3 Black is overcooked IMHO. Its still just a gopro...now at over 350 quid!! and still its most redeeming quality is its size and ease of mounting. 4K and 2.7K for me are a waste if time as I dont like the wide FOV which is the only option. 4k @ 12fps might be OK for pulling stills out of video.
Myself and 3 of my mates have GP3 blacks and we are all having issues with them.

Thanks for all the help guys. The cheapest I have found the phantom for is $679 and that includes everything to my door. Does that sound about right?

The Phantom seems pretty inexpensive for all of the features. Where else an you get radio, receiver, battery, flight system and frame for what DJI is selling the product for? I still like the F550 and F450 frames. They are easy to mod and customize they way you want. I imagine DJI has a larger version of a RTF Phantom that will compete with their F550. I wouldn't be surprised if AR Drone came out with GPS hold or built a radio controlled craft around a Gopro. The technology is getting cheap.
