Octo Build for Aerial Video

which axi motors were you trying to simulate in the eclac ? the 2812/22 ? If you stick with the approach that you want to use bigger props 13 plus and 6s, although some use higher voltage on the axis than you should probably go for the QC or the Torxs

I am concerned that even with S-Bus adapter I would still need all 8 ESC ports for motors. It appears to me from this diagram that the camera gimbals are used up by the 8 motor ESCs regardless of wether you have a s-bus adapter or not. I don't think I gain anything with s-bus adapter.

View attachment 2989

But the thought that you are not ganing much with the s-bus adapter is right. On the one side you gain octo plus gimbal stabilization on the other side you has just as much cable mix mess as if you would be using a standard receiver, even more actually.

You have the following options.

Octo with gimbal stabi from WKM.

1. Futaba Radio and Recevier S-bus.

2. Any Radio and Recevier with s-bus converter.

3. Radio for witch you can get a s-bus module from Futuba, has to be "Fasst" or module for your Radio from robbe called "Rasst". For which radios they provide modules i cant tell you you have to check.

Octo no s-bus in the game thus gimbal stabi from a second device.

1. You can use any standard radio but you will need a receiver with standard channel per channel signal no PPM input etc.

2. You will need something like picloc to do the gimbal stabi work for you. Probably better than the standrad WKM stabi anyways.

Oh, I see that now, yes that does free up the T & R ports for gimbal control. Thanks for the clarification.

The calculations were base on the 2814 motor. Oh, I already ordered the AXI 2814/22. That is the only thing I have bought - I finally found a source and they had it in stock, so I thought I should go for it before those were gone. However, I may be lowering the payload I can carry with that motor I think it will still support the 13" prop though; I note that is one of the recommended setup options on the DW web site.

no worries you will be fine with them. I had them on my MK octo they are very good motors !!!!

Don't buy that frame. I have that frame and roll is not smooth. It's not worth it. Spend your money on something prooven solutions.

Personally i wouldn't make a gimbal decision just yet. The CS gimbal is very good followed by the PH gimbal. But i think there is a lot more to come next year. If buy a gimbal buy a good one otherwise if the gimbal as the least mechanical issues you are better off without any at all. This whole stabilizing only works to a certain degree. Now if the gimbal its self than inflicts wobbles or jitters on your cam than its not worth it.

Yes, ovdt and Boris, I was starting to think the same. There are various components that I want to wait for. One is the camera gimbal, I want to do more research and as Boris suggests things could change before spring. Boris, any timeline on advances in camera gimbals?

The other item I have decided to wait on is the transmitter, Jeti and Spektrum updates are not set till spring but I think I can wait. I can use my DX6 till then.

Here is what I have ordered so far:
Droidworx ADH8 - HL Octo
AXI 2814/22 motors
The FPV setup

Still undecided about ESCs. I think I need to go 40-50A. I read the poor reviews about the Turnigy plush 40A on HobbyKing, so I was not impressed. Fentiums or Hobbywing are other options. I don't mind spending a bit more if it means a more reliable setup.

HobbyKing has something called Super Brain 60A

...or what about this:

Suggestions?

Batteries I know I will need at least 2 in parallel either 6000mah 4S 25~50C or 5000mah 5S 25~50C. Which would you opt for and how many in parallel? Other recommendations?

What are you trying to lift? That might be a good motor but it is larger (heavier and draws more power) than what I am using. The bigger question is what are you trying to lift. a better match for your Xoar props would be Avroto 2814.
http://montorc.com/M2814Shaft.aspx

The Scorpion motors seem too large for the props you mention. With a motor that big you could easily go 14 or even 15 inch props.

I have the Avrotor on an X8 and those seem quite nice with APC 11x6.5 or 12x4.7 props.

The safe range for this motor starts at 11x5 and ends at 13x6, with the 11x5 at 14volts (4s) , will produce 60oz thrust at 21 amps.,
The thrust is the same as the avroto with a 11x4.7. Not sure of avroto's amp draw. Are these figures at max throttle? If so then
with 8 motors you can throttle way back to around 13 amps with the smaller props and keep the rpm's up as compared to a larger prop.
I have the largest scorpion motor in my trex700, with a custom machined shaft to fit the pinion, and it seems to be a good quality motor
thats why I was looking for a scorpion equal to the 3328, 2814, etc. And this was the best match I could find.

I'm no expert so I'm exploring all motors. I hope to one day lift a red scarlet with a prime lens, across the english channel :)

Ah, I didn't look carefully enough - missed the chart legend, my mistake. However, the scorpiions are significantly heavier than the Avrotor or Axi 2814 (both just over 100 g.). The Scorpion comes in at 166g with about the same thrust as the Avroto (25A). I might be reading it wrong. Perhaps this is why the scorpions are not as popular for multicopters because of the weight difference when you multiply that by 8 or 4. I am no expert either when it comes to motors but the Avrotors work well and I am banking on the Axi to be even better.

So far the build has gone relatively well.

I am missing the motor boots from Droidworx/Quadrocopter.us but that will probably get resolved.

If anyone is doing a similar build with an ADH Droidworx frame there is one logistical problem with their instructions - before attaching the motor mount make sure you put the bolt for the boom clamp through the motor mount first before screwing it into the motor, otherwise if you have larger motors (e.g 2814) those are too wide to force the bolt around the motor.

There is one more issue and that is what is the POV mount and where does it go? The instructions list it on the parts and it is in the kit but not sure where it goes or what the purpose is. There are no instructions telling what to do with it.

I upgraded the frame to 465 mm booms so it would accomodate 14 inch props (that is what the droidworx site suggested) but when I put on the 14 inch props on, those look too close together - just barely enough room to clear each other. Maybe that is fine but I have been told elsewhere that you need room for prop wash between props. I may have to rethink my props.

Pov mount is for gopro. But with some extra holes you could fix your av200 on it. Goes next to the battery holders.

Good luck on the build.

Oh and the av200 needs the hlE landinggear to fit.
