Measuring with a multirotor

Is it possible and accurate to measure large piles of sand or stone with a multirotor? Using an altimeter and gps?

Yes - photogrammetry.
Google : photogrammetry + multicopter and you will see samples.

I did some trials a couple year ago with the Trex600 heli with a survey company. The biggest problem was keeping a constant altitude - and the second biggest was that most of the quarries and mines in my country are in rock ridges with strong winds.

With the new modern gps and altitude systems, it isn't just possible - there are companies already doing this.
