Legalities of flying

Being of sound mind and a semi responsible attitude, can anyone tell me the legal requirements to flying a quad in the UK?

I have seen that if you are going to do commercial aerial photography you need a B-NUC and insurance. If it is a hobby (for now) are you governed by any restrictions? I ask as there are quite alot of FPV on youtube that show what great hights these machines can go. Some are also amazingly fast.

Thanks

There are three big questions you need to ask yourself to be able to know whether it's legal. 1. Are you doing it commercially? (I realise you're not, as already stated). 2. Is your craft, with batteries, over 7Kg? 3. Does it have a camera that takes photos (not just for FPV)?

If the answer is no to all three then the only restrictions are that you must maintain direct, unaided visual contact, you must be satisfied that the flight can safely be made and you mustn't drop anything that could endanger persons or property.

If the answer to any is yes then it gets more complicated. The rules are in articles 166 and 167 of this document: http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP393.pdf
