In layman's terms what's the difference in TX's

I'm just getting into this hobby & I got the Phoenix sim w/DX5e for Christmas. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before going out, blowing the bank, & buying something I'll quickly outgrow. I'm looking at getting a witespy quad from Hoverthings & it comes with a Spektrum receiver installed. I know the DX5e will fly the thing, but with limits because of only having 5 channels. In layman's terms, can anybody explain to me the difference between the DX6i, DX7s, & DX8? Besides the obvious channel differences & model memory amounts, are any of the other features needed for quad flying or are they mainly for planes or helis? I've read the descriptions on the Spektrum web site, but to be honest, it makes no sense to the newbie. :upset: Thanks for your help!

Hi Kelly, if you only just starting out then what you have got as in the radio it will be perfectly fine with the witespy quad. The DX6i, DX7s, & DX8 and other types of radios are used for if you want any extras like camera gimbal controll, gain settings etc. I'v just read about the Witespy and that you can even fly it with a 4 channel radio, so you should not have any problems with it as you can set your gain settings with your computer.

Rob,

When I talked to Tom at Hoverthings he said that I would need a better tx in order to take advantage of all the naza features like auto level & altitude hold... If I have to get another one I'd like to plan ahead for the future so I don't have to buy a third. Eventually, I would like to have a camera gimbal. Do you know the differences between the dx6,7, & 8? Thanks! :)

Sorry Kelly i thought you just wanted to know if the DX5 was good enough for the Witespy quad, Silly me, in that case you will be better of with the DX7s or the DX8, that will cover most things for quads and more. DX6 you are limited.

Rob,

Thanks! Do you have any experience with these tx's? I read the specs, but it's all greek to me. I know typically "you get what you pay for" & "the higher the price the better the product", but I'm not sure for quads if there's a big difference between the DX7s at $280 & the DX8 at $350. Is it worth spending the extra $70 or are the features you gain more useful for flying planes & helis? I wish there was an "idiot's guide" web site for this stuff. :dread:

Anybody else have any knowledge to pass on to the newbie?

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
Kelly,
Typically, what we;re seeing is that the Futaba systems favor the DJI flight controllers as they have the SBUS receivers allowing the DJI to control up to eight motors and the MK controllers tend to favor the JR/Spektrum systems as the MK flight control can use Spektrum's satellite signal by itself without the receiver and many wires that go along with it.
You can use a Spektrum system with the DJI flight controllers by using a PWM to SBUS converter (As Ken pointed out in another thread) or by buying an SBUS receiver for JR/SPektrum from HobbyKing (quality/reliability unknown).
8 channels will cover most functions but 9 or more will provide camera controls plus some external flight control functions like GPS gain adjustments, altitude hold, carefree mode, etc. These are things that aren't as important at first but they factor in later as you begin to expect more from your equipment. If I was just starting out I'd probably buy a 9 channel JR 9503 again as it will give me about equal use with all the flight controllers. Others may feel differently.
Hope that helps.

Just getting into these multi's having come from the heli world I really thing the most bang for the buck is the 8fg super, but in the end you really need to get your hands on a few different tx's to see what feels best for you.

Thanks guys!

r.spitz - Since the witespy comes with a Spektrum receiver installed I figured on staying with Spektrum. Although, I hear good things about Futaba.

Bartman - That JR9503 looks way cool! Dang...$550...I might be buying a third tx after all. :upset:

I kept looking around at the dx7 & dx8. I found a lot of people saying they've had problems with their dx8's...sigh...maybe I'll just go with the dx7. It's half the cost of the JR.

I need to win the lotto! :livid:

Oops sorry missed that part. I have used the jr 9503 and loved it, the 9303 is also nice but if I where to switch the spek it would be the 9503, I do have a dx6i I use for my MCPX and it feels kinda toy like compared to the rest, like they say get the most radio you can afford so your not sorry later
