Hoverfly Hoverfly Pro gains explained

I am very new to Hoverfly and am still trying to grasp a few things. In the manual it states that a + gain value puts the heli in AL(auto-level) mode, same for AH(altitude-hold). but in reality, if you look at the position of the switch when it is in manual mode, it is a positive value and when AL is active it is a negative value. If this is a mistake it should be corrected in the manual.

"According to Fig. 13, when the Channel 5 or Primary Gain switch is in the negative position then the Auto-Leveling Mode is disabled and aPrimary Gain of 25 is used by the HoverCore™ algorithm. When the Primary Gain switch is in the positive position the Auto-Level Mode is
enabled and a Primary gain of 25 is used. These are good starting values for the Primary Gain. These values can be adjusted when you
tune your aircraft."

"Just as with the Primary Gain switch the positive side is used for enabling the AltitudeHold function and the negative side is used for disabling the Altitude Hold function."




As for setting the actual gain. Since there is only 1 number to adjust here HOW do you adjust the rate at which it snaps back to level AND the sensitivity? From my understanding you turn the gain up until it becomes wobbly and then back off until it smooths out. this is more or less the same on DJI. In reality if I start with the default value of 25 and work my way to 100 in small increments the heli goes from wobbly to overly sensitive. it actually gets pretty dangerous as with a high gain the heli will climb VERY quickly from yawing, pitching or rolling.

The heli flies amazingly smooth in manual mode, no doubt the best I have felt, very similar to flying a 600 size SRH. But I want auto-leveling to be smooth as well, obviously why I bought a multi and not a SRH. Am I missing something here? I understand you adjust most of this by using expos and throttle curves. but I see no way to make the heli level more "softly" and still maintain solid flight performance.

There is also conflicting information on whether or not you are supposed to equalize the manual gain value with the AL value. From talking to Hoverfly they said once you find your ideal gain value in AL, to adjust the manual gain to the same number. Why cant you have a separate gain for each flight mode? I must have misinterpreted the manual and what I heard form Hoverfly.

"11. The Primary Gain is not optimized. 12. Land and disarm the aircraft. Switch the Auto Level switch to on and adjust the EPA value to MATCH the Primary Gain value."


I am on the most current firmware. And i am using a JR 9503. X8 config.

I cant explain why HF do it this way sorry but I do know that very soon HF will have a new option with respect to AL mode which is meant to replicate the feel of the MK AL. I believe there will be the ability to have different levels of AL. HF have mentioned they are trying to get their AL mode to fly as smoothly as the MK AL modes, I dont know the exact details yet but this is something users have been asking for. I havent yet had an answer about the throttle calibration and esc calibration but from a comment Al made in another thread it sounds like there is a holiday or something which means they arent in the office this week.

"I want to add some info here. We have been making some changes to autolevel mode based on feedback from all of you but also some MK veterans that have switched to HF.

Our autolevel mode as it is today is very aggressive and determined to keep you level. So much so that it feels to some like you are fighting it. We are adding the ability to "smooth" this action. Working very close with MK guys they have told us that is exactly like MK at the smoothest setting.

So the next question is when. I am hoping in the next week. We have to complete some testing and hope to get it out in the next release."



I have always set my AL by getting the normal mode to fly nicely by increasing the gain till it starts to twitch and then lowering it from there. Once I have that right I then connect my board to the setup software and adjust the AL gain number to be equal to the normal mode in the setup software. This means that on my radio the numbers the radio show for AL and normal mode will be different. Thats always worked well for me.
Different conditions mean that I sometimes have to adjust while out flying so if I have to do that I just adjust the gains on the radio for both AL and normal mode equally.
I wish I could give you a more detailed or intelligent explanation but I just dont know why its done this way and I also dont have enough technical RC knowledge to explain it more.
As soon as I find out more regarding this I will let you know.
