Hi to everyone from North Georgia

Hello everyone, my name is Ross Fox, and I am glad to have found this website and the opportunity to join. A little info about myself. Iam currently employed as an electrical estimator/project manager for a fairlylarge electrical contracting company. I have been in the electrical industryfor 42 years, as I am now 62 years old. My interests has always been in the technical aspects ofequipment and machinery. I enjoy building things, working with tools, electronics, and etc. I am also an instructor at our electrical apprenticeship school in Chattanooga, TN. My course year includes electrical code, motors, transformers, blueprints, safety and electronics. I am also a ham radio guy and love photography.
Ihave been involved in radio control models from my teen years till now. Actually started with plastic control line airplanes when I was 10 years old, and then graduated to big control line balsa planes, and then on to RC airplanes from small to giant scale, pursued pylon racing, precision aerobatics, scale models, and etc. In the early 80’s, I startedbuilding and flying RC helicopters, beginning with Schulter models, then on toGMP heli’s, and Minature Aircraft model heli’s. In those early days of modelhelicopters, very few learned how to fly them, but I continued to pursue thatskill and became known as the go to guy for instruction on how to fly, and moreimportantly, how to build one properly and maintain it. I still fly radiocontrol heli’s and participate in flying events in the area. I have been interested in multirotors for quite a while now, but haven't made the plunge yet to get one. I have seen the multirotor technology sweep foward at a very high speed, and so I am now thinking it may be time to get a machine.
In addition, Iam also thinking about starting an aerial inspection company for constructionprojects, power companies, and other utilities, and similarly related fields. Iwould also entertain commercial uses such as real estate photography, andevents, where an overhead view would be a great enhancement. Needless to say, this area is the one that I need to learn a lot more about, concerning the possibilities of making any money doing it. I know I would enjoy a multirotor machine for the sake of just flying it. I also know that using it as a photography platform would be a lot of fun, as I enjoy photography. I have looked at quite a few machines on-line, and needless to say there are plenty to choose from. I can sort that out in time I think, and a video and still camera I will need to do quite a bit of research on. Fortunately, I can spend invest quite a bit of money into a machine and video equipment.
If there is anyone that can help me out as to the possibilities of an aerial video business I would greatly appreciate it. This is my first post, and of course I will spend time looking thru the threads as I am sure that there may be a lot of info there already that would help me. Thanks everyone and I feel pretty certain that a multirotor machine is just around the corner for me.

Welcome to the forum from another Georgia native. There's a ton of knowledge here. I relied on it heavily to get my start and still use it a lot. Plenty of friendly and helpful folks. One of the best forums I've ever been a member of.

Thanks much Benjamin and Shawn. I am pretty much convinced that I will get into multirotors. I will most likely pursue getting into a aerial photography business as a hobby at first, and then maybe part time small business. I have a couple of helis I can sell off, and then get started on my purchases of a multirotor and nice camera. Any other suggestions you may have would be most welcome. Thanks, Ross

Thanks all. I want to start with a kit, say a 6 motor jo,b and so I am starting my seach. Hopefully I will have it sorted out in a few weeks. I work full time during the day and teach at night thru April. Then I will have the time to really build a kit. Thanks all. Ross

DJI F550, check it out...probably the best "kit" out there to start with.

I looked at a few videos of this machine and I like it. A couple of questions, how much weight could it carry, such as a still camera or a video camera. Also, to get this unit with the everything, all of the electronics to fly it - flight stabilizer, motor controls, GPS hold and return home unit, and any other items - what might that cost. I have the transmitter and receiver. Ross

Ross, I have knock-off version of it and I have it fully loaded to about 4-5lbs. I have a 900mhz 1.5W transmitter, leg attachments, Naza flight controller, Go Pro camera, CCD camera, everything Eagle Tree OSD has as well as 2 x 4S x 4,000mah batteries and I could still probably lift 6-10 soda cans. It all depends on how big your props are and how powerful your motors are etc etc. The stock DJI F550 kit has no trouble with all the gear I listed above so you should be fine. There are TONS of people on here who have this unit and do FPV and even carry a Gimble and full camera setup.

Great information. I need to find a hobby shop that carries that model, and has all of the peripheral equipment similar to what you have listed. I am thinking about using it for maybe some commericial use, to where I might get paid for my finished work. I have thought about all of the many uses that overhead aerial photography could offer to potential customers. I have been researching these machines for only about a week now, and keep looking for someone's take on the potential to make a little money with it - but so far haven't been successful. I thought about aerial photography years ago with my big rc heicopters, but never pursued it. I knew then that some people were doing it, but an rc helicopter is in no way as stable as a multirotor, and especially today's modern multirotors outfitted with the GPS technology and stabilization. Heck, just a few years ago, I wouldn't have even considered flybarless rc choppers because of the difficulty in flying them, but thats what I fly now due to the gyro's out there that have made flybarless the way to go - if one understands whats going on with everything. I always like to build a kit of whatever machine I get. I assume that your DJI 550 is a kit? Have you considered using your machine for commercial paid use? Ross
