Flight simulator

Hi,

I'm looking for a flight simulator. There doesn't seem to be many with Tricopter or even quadcopter sims.

Anyway, are there any suggestions for the best flight simulator for multicopters please.

I have used the Real Flight 7. I was practicing on single rotor heli, but I checked out a couple of the multirotors. They seemed decent. I still think even a small "toy" quad gives a better learning experience, but the sim seemed pretty good too.

It's windows only, so that limits Real Flight for some.

Thanks MP, I've been practising with my home made tricopters, I even made a small one for the living room, but after quite a while, I think I should get a sim, so I can be more reckless.

If reckless is what you're after - the sim is the way to go :)

There are people making custom craft for real flight - these a whole dance to do to download/install them into the program. If you search around, you may be able to see if there are any that fit your needs.

sure. try freerider fpv. it's $5 only and offers 5 differnet scenarios. it's los and fpv flying of a quadcopter. really nice when coupled with your real remote or an xbox360 controller.

Freerider works great with my Realflight controller, too :)

Realflight is good for some things... styles like FPV racing or hard multirotor aerobatics leave something to be desired, though. Some tinkering can make it a little more realistic.

IMHO it's definitely the best for fixed wing. Works well for big multirotors, too. The Knife Edge Software forums have thousands of downloads for aircraft models, color schemes and flight model tweaks.

I tried Freerider, it was slightly better than the one that came with the dongle, both $5. As free software, they are both good for learning, but only give limited experience.

I decided to but Realflight 7.5, and have just played for a couple of hours with it. As a learning tool, it is great. The graphics are pretty good, but don't expect realism. There are lots of aircraft and places to fly available, some are better quality, and have different things, e,g, not all allow FPV.

Back to flight school for an hour or two:) Thanks for your inputs.

Cheers, Camerart.

FPV is only usable on 3D fields, the Photofield landscape is rendered from actual photos so the perspective would be all wrong if you moved from a set position :)

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
over at giantscalenews.com we do group flying, someone sets up a server named after the site and the guys filter through over the course of a few hours. it's fun, if you guys are flying RF 7.5 we can give it a try sometime.

Hi Bartman,

Your 'groups flying' sounds fun, but I don't have a proper internet connection, only a dongle, so it might use too much bandwidth for me. If you give a time and date, perhaps I could find a place to go and join in? I fly Tricopters, and after joining you site, can see there aren't many on there:(

I bought the RF 7.5. I don't usually like playing games, but as this is instructional, it got through the net, and I'm really enjoying it.

I bought the SIM to help with FPV, and I've built a copter with FPV, but in live flying, the changeover from eye to FPV is too risky.

I think the main problem for me is altitude. If I could fit a low flying altitude hold ('say' 2Mtrs), where I could leave it set, and concentrate only on steering, I would be happier. Is there such a thing?

Don't know if a sim can do that. If they could they would likely share the downside of real world FC's using alt hold or loiter and significantly reduce the speeds the simulated copter would fly at. Wouldn't be as much fun.

I'm only talking about 'real life' and the problem I have switching from live to FPV. It would help me practice if I could leave the altitude to autimation, and onlly concentrate on steering. No speed involved.

It comes down to a lot of repetitive practice performed fairly close in. The "Loiter" flight modes can be helpful. As your confidence and ability grows you move further away. Part of the process includes learning to see and recognize trends with altitude relative to how your particular screen or goggles depict the visualization. Then we have the latency factor thrown into the mix to muddy the water...

OM,

I've looked into it a bit, and I think you're right as I intend to go through holes in foliage etc, and a hole will be at an altitude, so I'm just going to have to practice.

Thanks C.
