Flight modes?

Would somebody please define the flight modes for me.

Obviously Manual and Failsafe are self explanatory, it's GPS and flight mode "A" I can't bottom...

What should happen in each mode?

Anyone worked out how to signal the unit is "homed" on startup from above? (LED is underneath so I can see in flight awkward on floor)) Audible chirp would be a good idea ;-)

Many thanks

Different Flight Modes

Disclaimer: I'm a newbie too...in fact I haven't even flown yet!

From what I understand there are three flight modes:
  1. GPS Attitude
  2. Attitude
  3. Manual

GPS Attitude Mode (normally referred to as simply GPS Mode) is the beginner flight mode. Your aircraft will move more slowly then when it is in the other two modes. In this mode your aircraft will position hold (both in altitude and side to side) when you let go of the sticks. It will automatically sense wind and adjust for it so you have a smooth flying experience. Attitude Mode - In this mode your aircraft will feel like it has "Attitude." It will be very nimble and you will be able to manipulate its positon with speed. You can think of this mode as the Intermediate mode. Manual Mode - In this mode everything is controlled by the pilot. Your aircraft will react as you dictate it, if you push the sticks too hard to the left or right, the aircraft will not auto correct your mistakes. The Naza will not interfere with your decisions. This mode is the Expert mode used by people who are very comfortable with flying and want to have full control over their aircraft.

This video is my favorite video on the subject: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxq4vMf00Zw
(It is FPV but it gives you a great idea of the control that you can have in each mode. The author does a great job explaining things)

To answer one of your other questions: I believe the Naza will record its home position upon acquiring six satellites. Once this is recorded, this is the location that it will RTH (Return to Home) for upon your command (if you've set a RTH switch on your controller) or upon loosing signal with your controller (if you've setup the failsafe.)

Speaking for WKM the 3 basic modes are pretty simple:
- GPS/Atti = Position Hold when Sticks are neutral
- Atti = Auto-Level and Altitude-Control but no (wind) drift compensation, doesn't rely on GPS
- Manual = minimal auto stabilization, even rolls and loopings are possible...

Taking into account all the other modes becomes very difficult, there are plenty of names for (almost?) the same modes, especially when controlled by Ground Station. GS uses another vocabulary (e.g. Autopilot Mode), which makes it even worse. The state diagram in the GS manual (titled "Control Mode Switch") is a good attempt to clarify but is far away from complete (and correct). When it comes to GS, things get really weird, IMHO.
