Different Flight Modes
Disclaimer: I'm a newbie too...in fact I haven't even flown yet!
From what I understand there are three flight modes:
- GPS Attitude
- Attitude
- Manual
GPS Attitude Mode (
normally referred to as simply GPS Mode) is the beginner flight mode. Your aircraft will move more slowly then when it is in the other two modes. In this mode your aircraft will position hold (both in altitude and side to side) when you let go of the sticks. It will automatically sense wind and adjust for it so you have a smooth flying experience.
Attitude Mode - In this mode your aircraft will feel like it has "Attitude." It will be very nimble and you will be able to manipulate its positon with speed. You can think of this mode as the Intermediate mode.
Manual Mode - In this mode everything is controlled by the pilot. Your aircraft will react as you dictate it, if you push the sticks too hard to the left or right, the aircraft will not auto correct your mistakes. The Naza will not interfere with your decisions. This mode is the Expert mode used by people who are very comfortable with flying and want to have full control over their aircraft.
This video is my favorite video on the subject:

(It is FPV but it gives you a great idea of the control that you can have in each mode. The author does a great job explaining things)
To answer one of your other questions: I believe the Naza will record its home position upon acquiring six satellites. Once this is recorded, this is the location that it will RTH (Return to Home) for upon your command (if you've set a RTH switch on your controller) or upon loosing signal with your controller (if you've setup the failsafe.)
