F550 What wieght are you flying with

I picked up a set of those RC Timer arms for my 550. They aren't the same height as stock arms, so you will lose a little bit of room inside your frame. I've already extended my arms with a set of carbon fiber extension plates I designed. They let me run 11x5 props with no problem, but I wanted to push it up a little larger still yet. Because of the decreased frame height, I haven't installed them yet. I have stuff stacked so high inside my frame that I'm going to have to move some electronics, which will require some rewiring also. What I thought would be a simple arm swap and adding larger props turned into a little more work that I haven't had the time for yet.

In the meantime, I put them on an old 450 frame that I had laying around. Now I'm thinking of building a 6S FPV craft that spins 15inch props and gets 30 min of flight time. ;-)

Wow thats one sick looking 450! I was thinking about these motors if I got the arm extensions for my hex. What were you going to use? What about ESC? The arms are so cheap, think I'll just get a set to see how they fit.

Sorry to hijack this thread, I think it's to late...

How much of that is camera and lens? What kind of flight time are you getting? How does it fly?

Camera is an NEX-5n (however, in that pic what you see on the gimbal is a dummy load weighing the same as the NEX. The dummy load is two rolls of nickels plus two nickels.....that is within 0.1oz of the same weight)

The major weight items are the camera, the gimbal (AeroXcraft VTR-125...rather hefty, that one) and the battery (Nano-Tech 4S 6000mAh).

With a single battery, about 9 mins. Flies about like you would expect it to....you'll not be doing 3D with it, but it's more than capable of most AP flights (which was the task it was built for)

Brother you ain't kidding!!! Camera/lens combo I'm looking at is $2000.00+!

Thanks for the info. You don't say what your intended lens will be (big weight component).

I usually use the Sigma 19mm f/2,8 prime lens. Other times....the Sony 35mm f/1,8 OSS prime.

(I save my Nikon gear and glass for safer pursuits)

Hello to all my name is Jose and I am In sunny Florida, any way I have a question to some of you more experience in heavier f550 birds
I just finish the upgrade of a regular f550 to a f550 with extended arms, bigger motors 2 axis gimbal NX6 Camera and I am having some stability issues in some light gusty wind it does abrupt altitude changes as well as roll abrupt changes very unstable have not crash, I been able to control it back to the ground, I have try several gain settings and no difference same in GPS mode as well in Atti mode any advice what to do or what are the correct gain settings my AUW is 7lbs.1.6 or 3k 220g

Thanks for the help

I think your thick foam skids will make the heli really react to any gust. The wind will tilt the heli as well as push it sideways. I would try it w/o the foam, or at the very least just have a short piece in either end of the skids.

You have a lot of sail area on that rig.

Assign the gain to a slider or dial on your TX and experiment while flying. Making small changes until it is easy to control, not too twitchy (too much gain) and not to slow reacting (low gain). It is a compromise. Also a heavier heli takes longer to react than a light one.

Just a few thoughts on a blustery Sunday morning. I will fly my multies in the local school gym this afternoon.

You are so right olof thanks it makes sense about my big fat skids they are nice for landing but they are sails in the wind I am taking them off and try again, I will post the results.
3 Q
Q1. what would you think is a good gain recipe to start twitting on a heave f550 in windy situation
Q2 what about the top of the copter weight vs bottom of the copter weight
Q3 gains for wind vs gains for no wind, is this something we should consider and adjust acordinly

thanks

Hi again ok so I took out the big pink floats flew agains a pretty mid-strong head wind big diference the copter behave way better than with the floats, in wind definitely the flat surfaces affect the copter stability
it reminded me when flying a small toy quad in the house nice and stable until the AC starts the quad starts to be unstable harder to control

thanks
