F450 or f550

I have a DJI f450. Love the thing. I just broke an arm during one of my stunt flying. I was thinking, instead of replacing the one arm I would get just the frame of a f550. Purchase two more motors and speed controllers. Then I would have three arms as spears and a copter with more lifting power. Is that correct? Would I have more lifting power with a f550? Just a thought.

If you want to improve lifting capability of your F450, another option for you to consider is, using arm extension (AKA "Heavy lift") kits.
These can be complete replacement arms, or just extensions that screw into the existing motor mount.
Either way, it extends the motor-to-motor distance out, so that larger props can be accommodated.
Try using ecalc to model the various parameters.

I'm looking at 13" props with T-Motor MN3110 motors running on 3S for my build.
ecalcs suggests this will lift >3.1kg AUW.

The F550's six motors would offer you some redundancy, if one of the motor/props failed however.

Wow. maybe replace the arm with longer ones.....3.1kg AUW.....

But the way, what would be the largest motor to install on the f450 without extending motors mounts?

There may not be much point to fitting larger/more powerful motors, without fitting larger props... which necessitates extensions, IMHO.

If you enter your existing setup in ecalc (to gain some trust in it's calculated results), and then tweak motor/prop combinations, you should get an idea of extra lift capabilities.

This is F550 based, but you'll get the idea: http://www.multirotorforums.com/sho...n-Larger-Props-and-Motors-gt-Now-Available-lt

Lets' know how you go, and when the time comes, don't forget to post up some pictures.
... we all like seeing this cool stuff!
