That AeroVironment Qube is, I'm sure, a lot more than $50K - the prices the big boys ask are ridiculous and IMO out of proportion to their likely practicality in the majority of the "scenarios" that the sales literature (and the press) refer to.

I bet the support alone is millions,,,,, probably the mechanical part is $50k a copy, then theres a remote/camera base platform for $50k, then the battery and charger are probably $50k.... haha, stuff adds up quick

in another story on the same paper this morning had 3d robotics in tijuana... guess there the PCB pick and place board makers for diy drones..... http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2011/11/07/tour-of-the-new-3d-robotics-factory-diy-drones/

there doing some conference in Tijuana this week, promoting there manufacturing.

I like it. Simple design, looks PVC-ish. Cops can deploy something like this on the fly to get a tactical view on evolving situations. $50,000 grand is touch much though. I like the underbelly CCTV style camera.

I can see that picture already on my mind: Two dumb cops (ever seen a clever cop...? ) are scratching their heads, trying to figure out the manual of the police drone while the suspected gunman, hiding on the other side of that wall, is having the lough of his life....

Here's my prediction, lots of hype as there was in Europe and then the discovery that they don't work in high winds at a drop of a hat and can be dangerous to all involved. Then the quiet withdrawal of projects. I have also said that until America has regulations none of this tech will be considered invented. Even though Australia and Europe are pushing on.

I have a collection of Police related UA stories here http://www.suasnews.com/category/police/

Nobody can be producing UA for the Police yet as the ASTM F-38 process is on going, oh yeah that's the airworthy standards group headed by Ted from Aerovironment, guess the Qube will be upto spec ;-)

The Police will end up operating Predator class platforms, well actually share large platforms with multi agencies buying time as required on persistent platforms that are there anyway. Just my thoughts!

Once DJI comes out with a APDGLU (Anti Police Drone Grenade Launching Utility), I will be their customer forever.....can't wait for the first dog-fights taking place.

First guys are in combat training already:

That's exactly what I forsee as well. It's not going to work, at least not as the technology stands now.

That is the second facility. The first is in California. I think they're building a third?
