Hoverfly Carefree Mode ?

Carefree mode requires at a minimum a 100% reliable and accurate compass, preferrably a full GPS/compass. Even in the best of systems it may not be 100% reliable and becoming dependent on having such a feature is IMO not a good thing to do. It may be a better option to become fully proficient in flying all orientations and rack up as much stick time as possible to make it reflex and not something you have to think about while flying then make sure to either stay within a line of sight where you can determine the orientation of the aircraft or have a means to see where it is and where it's going if beyond line of sight. If that means adding bright LEDs in some manner then by all means do it. If there is a need to fly far enough that visual orientation will be an issue then either a good FPV system to be able to see where the aircraft is and the direction its facing or a waypoint flight system that doesn't require the pilot to maintain visual orientation would be more useful.

Bottom line, carefree mode is not a substitute for being a proficient pilot comfortable with flying in any and all orientations, you need to be able to fly your way out of trouble and not rely on hardware or software to do it for you IMO.

I have several multis with a carefree function and its turned off on all of them.

Just my $.02...

I find it freaky, I dont like it, if things are going that bad I would rather switch RTH failsafe if it was clear LOS.

It might have its place if it worked really well. I think it would train people to not know how to fly properly as it would get over used. Perhaps a safety concern. If you get in trouble LOS with orientation, it might be better to flip on position hold and feel things out. My RTH on the Hoverfly pro has been so smooth and graceful I would not hesitate to use it if i got far out and had a clear linear path back to me. On the DJI wookong, I was jittery just thinking about flipping the switch.

i have a specific reason for why i want it but need to talk to George about it.

Yeah, I can blow that up.
Yeah, I say learn to fly a CP heli before flying MRs. Become a good pilot so you are not dependent on such features. It scares me to think that anyone could buy a heavy MR and fly it.

Probably because HoverFly customers are, for the most part, professionals and feature bloated systems are not what professionals want. Carefree mode is a sign of a "feature based" design approach no matter how well implemented.

Carefree mode has an application outside of simplified flight control. In my eyes it's a perfectly suitable application for what I have in mind and I still don't quite understand other attempts at mechanical solutions.

Easy? You call that easy?
I've had a play with Home Lock on the Naza and it works but its not a substitute for flying skill. I would use it instead of RTH as you still have control but each to there own. Do not learn to fly with this feature! Asking for trouble.

I wish I felt carefree when using it but I don't. I'm still inherently suspicious of these features as you de-skill the moment you use it.
