Blackmagic Production Camera 4K

I was considering purchasing the RED Epic and was stunned at the cost of a complete setup. I was checking out some reviews and I came across the Blackmagic production camera 4K. It looks very promising and is about a 1 1/2 lbs lighter than the RED Epic. I know this one not be out yet but they had a previous 2.5K camera that is the same weight and form factor. Has anyone flown the Blackmagic production 2.5K camera and if so what setup (airframe & gimble) did you use and how was the performance?[h=2][/h]http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicproductioncamera4k/

We were also considering pulling the trigger on an Epic but the BMCC4K is probably the direction we'll go. Bear in mind Epic has two stops additional DR and can overcrank...

I realize the Epic is a better camera overall but is it worth that much more of a premium? I am thinking not, plus I like that everything for the Blackmagic isn't so proprietary.

Not so new and improving
With a bit of luck the BM Pocket camera will provide good pictures and will be light weight. The cinema camera needs heavy lenses etc and most clients don't want to pay for Epic or Red. Flying a Red or Epic with no equipment insurance you will need to charge high prices and do a lot of flights to keep on the right financial side.

Most of the guys actually using the Epic are using it for very very specific reasons. They would argue yes (worth the Premium that is) For the rest it's simply a marketing tool. The few local RED lifts we've done here were ultimately downrezzed to 1920. Worked out for us, we used the extra frame for more aggressive post stab. We're in the second camp, the BMCC4K would be a marketing tool to attract 4K buzzword buyers and will be fine for 99% of those customers. Just started playing with the 5D3 shooting Raw and frankly has me re evaluating whether I need to add the BMCC at all. If the workflow gets native CS6 support I believe this will become the smarter lift choice (less money/less risk).

Thank you...you saved my day. I really thought I missed something with all the Red Epic hype.....:02.47-tranquillity:

PS: I am so jealous about your weather (either Miami or Doha) since we saw only snow and rain (exept a handful of nice sunny days) since October !!! last year. If I wouldn't leave Austria very soon, I would die from depression.

Chuckling... Cris is in Miami at the moment and loving it! Two weeks we'll be in Brasil freezing (winter down there)... Me, I've got 45C (113f) today. I'd kill for some rain Chris ;) ;) No humidity yet though, this is considered a "nice" day in the desert...

I have been looking hard at both the 2K and 5D3 but after seeing this video I am just not sure https://vimeo.com/49875510

The reality is either will probably be fantastic but still.

The Global Shutter on the BMC 4K is what has me most excited. Not just for aerials but for ground shooting too. I love the image out of the BMCC and pocket camera, and while the 5D3 is enticing because it also takes fantastic stills, it seems like the RAW hack is a big pain work-flow-wise, and using the hack is the only way to come close to the quality of the Red or BMC. No thanks for pro gigs, as the reliability can't be counted on.
The Red is a great all-around production camera for sure, but none of the best cinematography or best picture Oscar nominees shot on Red this year. They used film or Alexa, and from what I've heard and seen, the image out of the BMC matches the Alexa quite well. That's not the be-all end-all, but something to keep in mind.
Personally, I don't like the image out of the Red so much, but it still is a great camera and I have seen many beautiful things shot with it. Same goes for the 5D.
Of course, when is the BMC4K going to show up??

Chuckling here.. Well played BM.

GH4 is going to need the add on breakout box (price unknown) and a 2000 dollar recorder to get broadcast quality 4k out of it; Making the BMPCC actually cheaper, global shutter, Raw and uses EF lenses as well. Too bad its such an ugly brick of unriggable kit that seems determined to never truly arrive...

if the BMPC over cranked i would be all over it. And I really like being able to use my EF lenses! But it doesnt and i dont think RAW is something I wanna play around with. I'm color blind :)

2K isn't a camera, it's a resolution which, incidentally, both the 5DM2 and 5DM3 shoot. Actually, my phone shoots 2K as well! :)

Thanks .... my GoPro shoots 2K also but I figured the title of the thread would be a clue

I have had the camera for a week now, and it's my new favorite camera by far. The image is stunning, the larger sensor is refreshing, and the global shutter is a godsend. Here are a couple tests. The Top gun shootout has some warp stabilizer that you can see, but that was only because I was on an 11mm lens. I will post some before and after shots and do some more tests, but wow, it's amazing to get away from rolling shutter artifacts.

This is not to say that it is without faults. It has many, but I intend to fix some of those. ;)
