Are classes a necessity?

Hello everyone! I am planning on purchasing a high quality quad, like a phantom or a typhoon, and I was wondering if I need to take classes to learn to fly or not. Thanks.

Welcome Noob! It's not a necessity but it is a good idea if you've never flown any type of RC before. As "easy" to fly and "smart" these quads have become that doesn't mean you can't crash them if you panic while learning to fly. Having someone familiar with flying teach you safe practices and how to control your thousand dollar investment is well worth it, especially if you do have a mishap and find that repairing it can be costly. If you've never flown before I would look into a small quad to learn on which if you crash will likely sustain little or no damage before moving up to a phantom or typhoon. Crawl before you walk, walk before you run and seek advice when needed.

Some of the newer flight simulators are also a great place to start, many have the latest multirotor style models, even an FPV point of view from what I've seen. This way if you crash, it starts over all new...

If trying on your own, try to follow the following

Never fly when there are people of animal around
Never fly too close to trees
For the first few flights keep the model low
For the first few flights keep the model close
For the first few flights just move around slowly so you learn what control does what to the model
Fly too high or far away and you will loose orientation and probably your model (Don't ask how I know) ;)

Its a bit like going with a Virgin, By all means do it, just take your time and do it slowly
