Anyone ever make their own gimbal?

I'm looking to build one for my DJI450 and need to know if anyone has built one of these from scratch, what did you use for material and servos? Will standard servos work on these things or do I need something special? Any and all pictures of gimbals homemade or store bought would be helpful too I have a small hobby lathe/ milling machine plus other tools for building stuff so it is possible for me to make something that looks good.

For that size its probably far simpler to go direct drive brushless these days, generally the motors are cheaper then the grade of servo required to achieve descent results and the controllers, Alexmos and Martinez are cheaper than a good servo gimbal controllers. you can dispense with gears and belts etc.
