5.12 on Hexa

I have read that there are some with octo that have problems with the 5.12 version
Is it safe to install 5.12 on a Hexa?
I really want the new gimbal improvements, but not at the cost of crashing my f550

Guys, I was all pro 5.12 - I programmed it early this week and dialed it in very nicely. I think it flew much smoother, didn't get a chance to try out POI. I had (16) 6.5 minute test flights in practicing throughout the week for a golf course gig today. On the third hole my hexa took off and about 30 seconds into the flight I lost ALL power to the motors and it dropped like a rock into the grass right in front of me. I spent half of today rebuilding it and I have my gimbal plate jimmy rigged with an expoxyed paint stick piece to keep it from breaking in half so I can hopefully finish my commitment tomorrow. One of two things happened:

1. My power source plug somehow worked it's way out of my power distribution board connected with Dean's plugs. It was disconnected when I recovered my rig, but that doesn't mean much since the impact was so great it would have easily pulled it out. This has never happened to me and I fly a good amount.
2. The DJI Octo fairy paid my hexa a visit...

I'm nervous as heck to finish up tomorrow, but I have no choice. Part of me wishes my power distribution cable came out so I can blame it on myself...

I still think 5.12 flies much better, but if indeed this was some sort of bug that cut power to my machine, I'm definitely disappointed.
I don't know what to say, I see all these negative posts and try to stay positive, but damn, when you see $5k worth of dead weight slam into the ground you start wondering... I don't even want to reprogram in a lesser firmware version because I won't have time to dial it back in :upset:

Thanks for the reply guys. Sorry for your crash janoots2!
I'll guess I wait with the upgrade for now just in case...

Anybody else with a hexa experienced anything with 5.12?

Thanks, i had no issues up till then though, IF indeed it was related to 5.12, it def seems a little coincidental...Wish me luck for tomorrow!

I am flying two Y6 hexa's Very please with the upgrades especially the camera tilt/pitch I am on 5.12a .

Sorry for your crash Janoots. Unfortunately it happen to us all at some point and is the biggest learning curve you will experience.

Just a thought for builders of expensive MR. I always have TWO power leads and run YWO battery packs. Both power leads are soldered directly to the power board NOT via splitter plug. In that way if you loose a pack or a cell in a pack the bird keeps flying. Deans are rated to 60amps. Use something better for your big birds, personally I use Traxxis.

Hexa Crazy
I have any update and will glady take comments.
I fly Hexa- See specs below. I was flying 5.10 with no issues.
I upgraded to 5.12a yesterday and had a few near crashes.
Is 5.12a for octo users only? perhaps I need to use 5.12?
Here's the problem:
When flying in 5.10 my hexa would "wobble" or "react with roll shake" when in hover and hit by a strong breeze. When flying in forward flight it would never react to a breeze.
Now with 5.12a it reacts "violently" with wobble when both in forward flight & hover.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
I am definately going to try a different assisant version.
I will use 5.12 if 5.12a was for only octo users...can anyone verify this?
Otherwise I will go back to 5.10.

Sounds like there are people having trouble with 5.12 on hexa too..
Anybody know if DJI have plans for a new version (not the 5.12a beta release). Really want the gimbal improvements but no way if I am doing the upgrade at this point

I'm with you on this one. I, too, was jonzing so bad for the gimbal improvments, but not at the expense of how my Hexa flys right now.

Here is my Hexa on 5.12..

I had updated it that morning.. flew around for about 2 full battery in front of the house. .hovering, testing.. etc..

Then decide to go to the park for a longer run and RTH test. The test had a weird start.. that was not apparent in the home test. Lifted off to about 25ft, hovered for a bit.... I notice it twitching.. randomly while I was just watchin it hover.. make a small 5-10ft circle.. up and down.. looked fine other than random twitches.. I took the bird out a long ways and hovered about 50ft about 1 min. I then powered of the TX and RTH worked as it should have.. the bird twitched here an there, but was not often.. maybe about 4-6 times that was visible before it started descending to a great landing. I could not power up my TX and get control back without pulling power from the WKM.

So after that, I decided to test the low-battery land by just hovering it near and letting the wkm do it's thing.

Here is the results after about 3 mins of hovering at that location. I was just walking back from getting a water bottle and the camera in my hand, planning on sitting the camera on the bench to view both the TX and the F550... be quick..

can't say what is wrong.. but this WKM also took down a S800 on 5.2 same way.. so I am don't believe this being the software/firmware since it did the exact same thing to the S800 2 weeks earlier on 5.02.

I am weary to try anything at all now, but gotta get back out there.

Hexa Crazy
An update.
I went back to Assistant 1.28 (5.08).
My problem still exists so I do not feel it is related to firmware.
The problem is actually getting more frequent, and more violent so I believe it to be a "hardware" based issue.
I have been doing some additional testing. The problemspresists even with no (zero) wind.
I take off, as I begin to ascend and flyforward, a massive violent wobble, then another.. and another. It is unpredictable when it will happen. Sometimes in forward flight..sometimes in hover.
The "wobble" is a violent osolation in the roll axis as though you were very violently and quickly giving left & right roll commands.

I will be working with my DJI dealer to find the cause...motor, esc, MC, IMU.. etc.
I wish to point out that this is a new problem. I had many perfect flights without incident prior to this problem arising.\

Any input from other would be appreciated. Specs Below.
I have been asked by the dealer to fly in ATT mode and see if it happens when not in GPS.
I have to say this scares the crap out of me as my Hexa has never been crashed.

Try with another TX if you can, just to isolate the problem...
