3rd Party ESC’s

Gentlemen,

I need to set up some Turnigy Plush 30 amp ESC’s for use with my WKM. I noticed on page 9 of the manual that the midpoint needs to be set at 1520us (milliseconds I think). How can I set this or verify that this value is set correctly?

And what’s up with cutting the red wire? I have used DJI 30A OTPO ESC’s in the past an have not cut any of these red wires.

Thanks,
Don

Don, the Wookong PMU has a built in BEC that powers the unit. So there is no need to have ESC's with a BEC. If your Opto's have a BEC built in, Then you will want to remove the Red wire from the servo plug, before plugging in your ESC to the wookong. If your ESC's do not have a built in BEC, then you do not have to worry about cutting or removing the red wire.

Hope that helps a little.

to set the throttle range, you fire up each esc on the throttle ch of the receiver and follow directions. it is usually boot the esc at full throttle, no prop and drop the stick after 2 seconds and you get a tone. that shows the esc's what top, bottom and center throttle are. All radios are 1500, modern ones anyways. my jr/spektrum stuff always registered 1520, my futaba registers 1498 mid stick. Anywhere near there is what your after

more important is getting the lvc turned off

Thanks for the tips.

Yes, these ESC’s have a built-in BEC so I’ll be trimming the red wires. Actually, I am planning to add a short servo extension and cut the red wires on the extension. I thought this would be better than altering the ESC for the rest of its life.

About setting the mid-point question, I am using a fairly new DX8 so I fell better knowing that this will register correctly. But where can I see this value? I’d like to be able to see to verify it. I guess I am a firm believer in the “trust but verify” approach to life and flying. The kids hate it!

I picked the servo Y-lead suggested and a programming card. That’s a nice, easy to use site.

Thanks again for the info

you don't have to cut it, in case you want to program the esc later with the card, you cn unclip it form the servo end and fold it bac, heat shrink it. I take and unplug the red and black wires from the end and strip those back to the esc then either unsolder or trim the wires so they can be safely insulated and covered in heat shrink,,,, out of view.

these cheap esc's do not have a way to look at it, but it makes a distinct beep when you did it right and the motor will turn on almost instantly touching the throttle and will seem to have a throttle range as you increase to the top position. it is super easy, the typical problem when it's wrong is a motor won't start when the rest do

It takes a flight controller with software to see what your number actualy is coming from the radio. open pilot shows it, totalG shows it, V-bar shows it.
